Need large map help please

Ok, I've gotten to the point where I can take on the small and medium maps with relative ease. But I am getting my butt kicked with the large maps that have more than one star system. My problem is that I get close to taking over my specific system, but around this time I'm usually attacked by several computer armies who seem to be aligned. I try to carry out jobs from the computer players, but their friendliness only seems to last a short while. I make a trade agreement and very often the group I made the agreement with almost immediately drops the agreement. I assume it is critical with large maps to create aliances? I prefer the TEC and I play the original game verses the computer. Any help will be appreciated.

By the way, it just blows me away how many people here seem to know soooo much about every ship and it's special abilities.

If you play long enough you'll eventually get to know them all, but anyways on to your main question...

The issue here is that you're playing on "unlocked teams" settings.  The AIs tend to make alliances amongst each other early and often, but expect you to complete missions for the right to be considered for such a privilege.  As a result, especially in multi-system scenarios, this can turn into everyone against the player.  The easiest way to prevent this is to turn on locked teams, which will prevent the AI's from allying with each other and will make them treat you the same as anyone else.

When I first got the game I thought I wasn't that great...until I realized the AI's eventually all allied and I was fighting 5 of them by myself.

If you get a lucky break, one or more AIs may end their mutual alliance and turn against each other, usually because it has no more enemies (AIs almost always shuffle alliances so that they have at least one enemy if any other players are left). I saw it happen after I killed an Advent AI: the other Advent and a TEC AI ended their mutual alliances and turned on each other (and witnessed the Advent AI suffer an overwhelming defeat - lost 6 capital ships, three of them level 10).

In Sins vanilla it is really hard to protect a large empire, even as Vasari who can quickly jump all of their forces from one end of their system to another (if the gates don't get buggit).
I must say it is at times almost impossible to do - simply because the enemy can bring number_of_AIs*2000 fleet supply points of ships, which means that against 4 AIs you can only bring out 2000 supply points, while they can attack you with 8000. There is no bloody way you can beat THAT, except with MB spam or repulse abuse.

With Entrenchment, however, it becomes relatively easy.

also, trade agreements only give trade bonuses. what you really need for a true alliance is a ceasefire (60-70% allegiance) or a peace treaty (80-90% allegiance). those numbers are rough estimates, but close enough that you get the point.

In my experience, AIs tend to break alliances when the "love-meter" hits 85% or below.

I believe <85% is the point where they break Peace Treaties.

If you only have a Cease Fire, they'll stay with you until you drop below 40% or around that percentage.

i was saying the allegiance needed to make a treaty, not lose it
