Internet Shut Down During Emergencies

Bill could give Obama control of Internet during emergencies

A new U.S. senate bill has been redrafted to give President Obama the power of control to shut down the Internet in case of emergency situations. The 55-page draft that was obtained by CNET appears to permit the president to seize temporary control over private-sector networks in a cybersecurity emergency.

If the bill is passed, it would allow control to temporary disable Internet traffic in private-sectors. "A Senate source familiar with the bill compared the president's power to take control of portions of the Internet to what President Bush did when grounding all aircraft on Sept. 11, 2001."

Larry Clinton, president of the Internet Security Alliance, which contains large Internet and telecommunication companies such as Verizon, Verisign, Nortel and Carnegie Mellon University said "It is unclear what authority Sen. Rockefeller thinks is necessary over the private sector. Unless this is clarified, we cannot properly analyze, let alone support the bill."

The bill is still unclear what power of control President Obama might receive until it is properly addressed after the Senate's summer recess.

The bill is to protect against cyber threats and attacks on critical infrastructures such as the power grid in case of an attack from a broadband connection. Such control over the Internet may never be executed but with hackers getting more creative, national security becomes top priority in emergencies.

I have watch them too starkers, bunch of rabble. Imagine what would happen if they could work with each other.

Does anyone know what it would take for the US government to seize control of the Internet?

Do they have to stop all the servers or just get the telecommunication companies to pull the plug. Is this possible? This is a government who could not control the situation in New Orleans after the storm.

UNLIMITED POWER!!!

Darth Obama and the Sith are taking control of the internet, and ultimately, the Empire...

Do we have any Jedi to stop them?

Let the rebellion gather pace...

If they want the control, they'll get the control. No matter what anyone else says or does. No costs spared.

Yepp. It's kind of interesting that out of the 300'000'000+ people in the US only two are "capable" of running the country by the time of every election.

I'm not saying the Swedish system is any better though, it sucks as bad as any other...

I'll give any dictatorship credit for one thing, and that's the fact atleast they're upfront and honest about how they rule.

This whole "free world" thing is just stupid. We're not really more free than anyone else, we just got a cell with more bling.

I better stop now or I'll eventually talk about 70 years old ladies knitting... :P

In some ways, people living under dictatorships are 'more' free.  Whereas they have one law "obey thy leader", we have laws to cover just about every aspect of our lives and more.  In the 'so-called' free world we may or may not get shot for breaking those laws... the difference under a dictatorship is that has a more distinct possibility.

Still, I'm glad that I don't live under a 'total' dictatorship.... I like to call our PM an effwit.... and live. :-"

The problem with dictatorships is that they are intrinsically whimsical...run by control freaks and paranoia. So, what might seem "reasonable" or relative freedom isn't...only the rule of reasonably thought out and enforceable laws stands a chance.

There you go, that's the problem.  There is no reasonable thought unless it's self-serving, and laws are enforced by social status not with equality.

There's plenty of reasonable thought that isn't self serving....i.e. Equal Justice under the Law. We must strive always to make that true, for the surest way to Revolution is through "privilege" and as Justice Brandeis (I believe) said, "It is not enough that Justice be done: It must be seen being done."

I'd like to be around then too. Reminds me of a story about three men:

Three men, an Italian, a Frenchman, and a Jew, were condemned to be executed. Their captors told them that they had the right to have a final meal before the execution. They asked the Frenchman what he wanted. "Give me some good French wine and French bread," he requested. So they gave it to him, he ate it, and then they executed him. Next it was the Italian's turn. "Give me a big plate of pasta," said the Italian. So they brought it to him, he ate it, and then they executed him. Now it was the Jew's turn. "I want a big bowl of strawberries, " said the Jew. "Strawberries!!! They aren't even in season!" "Nu, so I'll wait..."

I have to strongly disagree Doc.  Justice under the law in this and for that matter most countries is about wealth, power and priveledge.  We see it all of the time.  Those that can buy the dream team defense walk while the poor man with a public defender gets 40 years for stealing to feed his family.  Happens all too often.

I understand why you disagree. Unfortunately the system isn't perfect, and I didn't say it was. I believe it is a worthy and necessary goal.

If you're asking "what's perfect?" I'd answer "nothing". If you ask "what's worthy of and should be perfected?" I'd answer "Justice".

Equal Justice under the law is an abstract, and even if it did exist, and two individuals looked at it, they'd not agree it's perfect.

If it is attainable,  that isn't self serving....it serves society and everyone equally. If you object and say "That's not altruistic" that's correct...but it's not altruistic equally. I hope I explained it well enough....though I probably didn't.

Sorry to disappoint, old friend. I wish I were more eloquent.

Let's hope it doesn't change soon, then.... leaders need to be reminded they are dickheads every now and then... helps to remind them that they can be voted out.

BTW, not that I'm implying anything here... but I'm curious. Is there a difference between a dickhead and a 'bone'head?

Don't wanna know but I'm asking... like I'm thinking (below the belt) and wonder if there might be some similarities. ;P

Precisely... like when gov't enables a law that allows them to put parking meters in a place that does not need or qualify for them: EG, in a street that not in the CBD, is never over-parked and parking poses no hazard to passing traffic.  Gov't, in its self-serving wisdon did this in a street not far from me, where residents and visitors have no off-street parking... they put in 40-odd parking meters under a new by-law to 'supposedly reduce traffic congestion.

Yeah right, in a quiet suburban street that sees little traffic volume and is not an intregral part of the traffic network.  Truth is, with no off-street parking for residents/their visitors, it's a revenue raising exercise.

Thing is, this is only one instance of gov't passing self-serving laws, many, many more exist world-wide.

I dunno!   It has a nob on the end like a dick. It it much longer than a dick.  It's probably much harder than a dick.

It looks like a femur bone... but then, it could be a pre-historic dick. ;P

Nope, I'm confused... though the guy bears a striking resemblance to our PM... the previous one even more.

Our idiot PM doesn't want to shut down the internet as such... but he wants to eliminate porn by installing filters at the ISP.

Yeah right!  The first model cost taxpayers millions in research, etc, and an 11 year old wiz cracked it in under 10 mins.

That, I think, qualifies our PM to be an effwit dickhead. :-"

Precisely... we'd then be forced to obtain under the counter pron and keep the magazines under our mattresses.  For some that's gonna be a problem... pecariously balancing a mattress on a stack of magazines 'THAT' high.

And without internet pron there'd be a lot of people falling out of bed and breaking bones.  Like they say, it's not how far you fall, it's the landing that hurts most...and in my case, all I got is a concrete floor the break my fall.

Me thinks I'll be keeping my mags under the spare mattress, then... got brittle bones and it'd be one helluva way to fall.
