Massive ping spikes.

Massive ping spikes.

I've always been a happy customer, never had a problem. My upload speed was fine, my computer rocking, and no wierd graphic bugs. But one day my bliss was suddenly interrupted by a extreme ping spikes.

Sunday I had no problems at all. But yesterday, all my games suddenly became unplayable. Suffice to say, I made some people very angry.=(

In the lobby its fine, but in game it gets really bad generally stuttering the game, with pingspikes over 3000. Now this sounds llike the zero configutaion Windons thingie, but I already disabled it. Also, when i alttab and click my connection it suddenly says I have 1 mbps, while normally I have 54. Now I did some speedtests, and my upload speed sometimes suddenly drops, and whats more my download speed is bottlenecked too(1 mbps) but only when my upload stream is "stressed", otherwise I can just download normally. So, I sometimes have 1 mbps upload but otherwise I have 0.19 mbps, and my connection screen says my download speed just dropped to 1 mbps.

Torrents are superslow.

The strange part here is that I never had problems before, yes I could play 5vs5 smooth.

I have a wireless Belkin N1 connection.

The good news is its nothing to do with your connection Katana.

The bad news is...its the game, so you're fubared like others amongst us.

You haven't read the thread... he has trouble with the WLAN connection.

Its not the WLAN at fault. The fact the speed is crashing is for the very same reason the game is spiking. Upload saturation (which degrades download speeds as a result). This all occurs once the game commences which directly points to the game being at fault.

What more is there to read?

His WLAN signal drops from 54 mbps down to 1 mbps, maybe indirectly caused by torrents or playing the game. This has nothing to do with the game itself or his ISP. It's an issue with his WLAN adapter or the WLAN itself.

Lifekatana: it's described on page 48 and followed in the manual.

Read it again spooky.

"In the lobby its fine, but in game it gets really bad generally stuttering the game, with pingspikes over 3000...it suddenly says I have 1 mbps, while normally I have 54."

Look at the chronology of events.

Game boot (fine)....lobby for game (fine)....game start(spiking).

and because shouting works....THE GAME IS CAUSING IT! :P

  • All this points to the WLAN connection.
  • And all this definitely means, that the problem does not lie within the game itself.
  • A game cannot influence the signal quality of the WLAN.
  • The game cannot influence torrents like that, without even running...
  • The game did not receive a patch lately, therefore it can't just magically have a problem for him all of a sudden.

Everything being fine in the lobby just means, that the WLAN only breaks down (for whatever reason) when something is going on.. like actually playing the game, making a speedtest or having torrents running.

While thats true, Katana only mentioned these problems after the game acts up so we must assume that the evidence provided was gathered during those times (ie when the game is running). They are the result of, rather than the cause of the issue.

Unless Katana can clear the issue up and tell us these things occur apart from the game. :)

It doesn't matter if they happen during the game or apart from the game.

  • The game cannot influence the signal quality of the WLAN
  • The game cannot influence the download speed during a speedtest like that
    • No, saturated upload does not inherently limit the download speed. Saturated upload only means that a download request will start later. But it doesn't influence the actual download. In torrents it does indirectly influence the download speed too, since a saturated upload means the the acknowledgement packages will be sent later and therefore the download of the next piece will start later, reducing the overall download speed.

And the only reason he would have a saturated upload bandwidth in the first place is because his WLAN is acting up. Otherwise his upload speed is sufficient.

A friend of mine had the same problem with his WLAN (using WinXP) and found a solution:

Speed test also doesnt work, stop whining about the game.
