Online Map Browser

/me needs a life

So, in a fit of bordom, a need to do/learn something new, and a complete lack of wanting to open every single map just to see what it looks like (although that would have been quicker), I decided to make this... thing.

First up the disclamer:

  1. I have NEVER done something like this. I have done some simple scripting and such but not something like this.
  2. It is very buggy.
  3. It looks and works pretty shitty right now.
  4. I have no idea where to post this so if it is in the wrong section please move it and sorry.

With that out of the way, I present to you my "Online Sins Of A Solar Empire Map Browser Thing"

http://galaxy.highguard.net/

There are several maps that break it and do not work (such as Ancient Gifts), still trying to figure out why.

I already know a lot of things I need to do to improve it, such as get it to draw phase lanes and such. Again, this is the first time I have done something like this and I have only spent the past couple of days working on it. I do plan to continue to work on it if only for me and my need to learn.

Questions, comments?

P.s. This is also my first post on the forums so... o/ hello forum people B)

I go to click on "View Map" and get: "Internal Server Error"

I deleted the map "Ancient Gifts" from the server as it would cause that error. If it is doing it for another map as well please let me know.

if you are looking at making some sort of Sins related program, you'd be very well off talking to , he's made all sorts of programs, from Mod Auto-Updaters and User-Friendly Text Editors, to Map Updaters and Language Translators for Mods etc.

If its help you need, he'll be the best guy for the job.

Now, let me understand, this program is to enable the user to browse a database of Sins (Custom?) Maps with the ability to preview the layout of the map (along with standard details like designer, Map backstory, best player numbers etc etc), and, ultimately, facilitate downloading custom maps by creating a one-stop shop for all maps to be uploaded to, previewed, and downloaded from, rather than running around to multitudes of websites.

sounds like a GREAT idea, and i really think someone should 'sell' the idea to IC so they can provide support for it, provided the program works as advertised and becomes a moderate success on its own, that is.

anyway, kudos to you

sorry rezonator, but I am NOT a graphics programmer, but all of my utilities work by searching the various files /directories for what is wanted and writing the results to files, also on the mod updater I have found what was causing the files not to convert and have found a means to work around it, and am now waiting upon permission to re-distribute the old convertdatas with my utilities future versions, and the same effect was happening with the txt bin gui, but as most of the files were only being processed by the version they were from then there was minimal problems.

I am also having problems in the text translator, string fixer in that I might have to break it into two programs one for string fixing and another for translation, but that is in another thread.

I also would like an offline program to quickly view maps without having to load them into galaxyforge to see the map.

Yeah.  Here's a tip.  Open the map, then "Surrender" and "Keep Playing", and you can see the whole lay-out instantly.  (You don't have to wait for scouts to explore everything, and only show a partial, incomplete image).

Did a quick update before leaving for work. It now shows you the map on the same page you select the map so you do not need to go back a page just to look at a different map.

When I get home I will be working on it some more. My first objective is to add a bunch of error checking and logging so I can hopefully track down why it does not work for some maps more easily.

TheRezonator: Yes, mu objective is for this to be a site where people can upload/look at custom maps and such. I will be starting it with just the normal maps that ship with the game so I can ensure it works before opening it up to the masses.

SageWon: I could also open them all in the GalaxyForge editor... but where is the fun in that! :andrew:

P.s. there are some wicked smilies on these forums.
