tips for a beginner in GalCiv

I have just obtained the Ultimate Edition, and I have never played GalCiv before, though I am familiar with turn based strategy games. Where should I start in order to learn the basics? Sandbox game on DL, DA or TA?

Thanks

Sandbox, definitely. Re which version, the base game is simpler and so easier to learn, but some folks argue that there's no point in playing anything but the latest version because it is 'complete' or 'more fun.' I think you'll get the most playing time for your dollar if you at least try the older versions first.

Whatever version you end up playing, you'll probably find old posts around here that address almost any question you might have. The local search isn't good at finding old results, but if you add site:forums.galciv2.com to a direct search from a site like Google, you'll get plenty of hits with no clutter from the rest of the net.

Re: Search.

The local search IS google search now, so it works plenty fine.  A while back they replaced their search option that didn't work well.

Works OK, but it is not "plenty fine." It does not return hits for older posts (not sure what the timeframe is).

I would suggest you start with Dread Lords (DL), then Dark Avatar (DA), then Twilight of the Arnor (TA). DL is the base game and is a good place to start. DA introduces super abilities, asteriod mining, mega-events and other stuff. TA introduces the unique tech trees, unique planet improvements, and new kinds of ship modules (and unique to civ versions of the stuff).

You might wish to look at my guide when you get to TA:
