Wake me up when you have a tutorial-new and frustrated

Seriously, I read your manual, saw the excuse for not having a tutorial set of missions, then realized I will never play this game onlione. I really like what stardock stands for and the game looks like a lot of fun, unfortunately I have never really played any rts of any kind, and I am not about to jump online only to make someone elses experience suffer because I have no idea what I am doing, For a MP only game, seems to me having no tutorial is a sure way to cut the legs out from anyone new to this type of game.

I mean you obviously have a lot of connection problems and issues with this game which is frustrating people, then people finally get a game going and lo and behold you have someone like me as one of the ones who is in the game and i get to ruin it for everyone because I have no idea what I am doing, sounds like a lot of fun huh?

Anyway, Ill check back in to the game everyonce in awhile to see if you guys decide to put in some kind of tutorial, until then I'll keep away from ruining poeples online experince.

Oh stop it. Play the single player tournaments all the way though with a few different demigods. Once you can win a game against hard AIs you're more then ready to start your online experience.

yup, have no idea what im doing tried that, like i have said never played a rts before only shooters, so its alittle baffling what im supposed to be doing but thanks for your suggestion, maybe i will just log into games online and learn that way let me know the next time your playing so i can click randomly and you can have fun too! I can't even beat the first thing on easy btw, hell even a video tutorial would be helpful.

Rule #1 in all RTS to get better: imitate what a better player does (even if that player is an easy AI in your case).

@ dphulgin,

please stop crying like a little Baby, just play the game on multiplayer, you will learn, it takes time, everyone makes mistakes!

the beauty of multiplayer is, you can ask people how to play!

so get out there and have fun!

note: EVERYONE IS A NOOB AT THIS GAME ATM.

First, read the instruction manual. Second, look at the controls. That should give you a basic idea of how to play. Next, play the single player skirmishes and tournaments until you can beat hard AI 100% of the time.

There, you're ready.

just practice against cpus.  Left click to select your demigod.  right click to move around.

hold left mouse button and drag to make a selection box.

your buttons for skills are laid out niceley.  1,2,3,4 number keys, with the f1f2f3f4 your consumables (potions etc)  all that can be controlled with your left hand while you move with your mouse.  now strategy just mess around with computers and play online a few times to get the hang of it.

Now you may be thinking "I know how to do that"  however, from your explanation that you don't know how to play RTS games Im going to assume you don.t

Also another helpful thing is to hold down alt while moving so you attack move into grunt mobs.

Single player is the tutorial.

Play against the AIs.  Still doing bad?  Put more AIs on your team to help.

Played some and now know what you're doing?  Even the teams.  Too easy?  Ramp up the difficulty.

Still winning?  Now play online.

I've never played an RTS before. Infact I hate RTS and RPGs so I only play shooters but I love this game, and am in the top 5 for my Demigod.

I'd like to point out that there are more than a few people who take the game far too seriously.  That said, play the game, try different things out, and read the strategy forums for some ideas.

Now a few notes that may help you out.  Please bear with me if they seem overly pedantic and/or useless.

This isn't really an RTS.  It's more like a Diablo Arena or a third person CounterStrike or Team Fortress.  With half of the Demigods, you only control your own character.  With the Generals, there are strong builds that don't depend on the Minions.

If you read the manual, you probably understand the commands.  However, here is a quick run down of the first few clicks you should do.  Click on the Plus sign to the lower left of the Demigod portrait.  You'll be taken to a screen to select where to put your first point.  Second, you may want to click on the forth circle on the right side of the bar.  This will open the favor item area to select your favor item for the game.  You can't change the item during play.  Check some of the forums for a basic ranking of items and why.  Click on the shop and choose items.  The cursor changes to a coin over a shop type structure.

In the beginning of a match you have chosen a Demigod with their own unique starting stats and abilities.  Depending on your play style, you first buy some equipment.  Then you go to kill some creeps.  The basic idea at the beginning of the game is to kill creeps and avoid dying.  There are usually multiple paths of creeps in the game called lanes.  I'd find a lane without another Demigod in it and just stay there killing creeps.  Most lanes have a flag in the vicinity, stay near it to capture the flag.  You'll get a boost to xp plus whatever abiltiy the flag possesses.  If you get attacked 2v1, run.  Don't just run to the towers, run deep into your territory.  If you're really low, run to the green crystal in your base.

If they look to be camping the creeps or capturing the flag, like you should be doing; go to another lane, help a team mate, or if you have a enough gold, run back to base and buy better gear.

Good stuff to get:  There is a great ITEMZ guide in the strat section of the forums.

A random fact, you can drop your stuff.  Don't right click on your items and gear.  You'll drop the item and other people can click on them to pick them up.  That said, when team play picks up, keep an eye out for gear that other people may have dropped.  OR, help a team mate out by dropping potions, scrolls or other items for them to pick up/use.

Second random fact, there is an aggressive move function.  Alt click the ground and your attack the first thing you come to.  However, a quick tip is that there is more gold and xp in the archers and priests than the grunts.  If you click on them first you'll speed your leveling and gold income.

single player skirmishes are a good way to learn the ins and outs. the game isn't complicated enough that a tutorial would illuminate anything in particular. its really just point and click. the rest of the learning curve can only be taught by experience. the important decisions are about strategies and positioning. a tutorial wouldn't teach either of those.

just play. lose at first but watch what other players (even the AI) are doing. come online and read the forums to get an idea of tried and true strategies.

you can pick up the basics of this game in like, an hour or two. no excuses.

Thanks, i was a little lost, but i just beat the easy ai, read your stuff, and it took about an hour in that 2v2 arena against easy ai, but it was fun i guess i'll do some reading and keep at it.

Try starting a game against the AI.  In the options menu (while you are in the starting lobby) you can turn the game speed to "Adjustable".  After the game starts, use the + and - in the numpad to turn the game speed to -10.  At that speed, you can mouse over everything, and take you time reading stuff and chosing talents/spells/items.  Turn the speed up or down however it suits you best durring the game.

Yes, a couple of my other game friends were pretty shocked by the lack of any tutorial (one had never played a rts type game before either).  Hopefully they will put one in the upcomming demo (or they really will confuse newcommers).

Friend me, and I'll be glad to play with you on my team if you try online in the future.

Oh, and online, one of the #1 tips is "Don't get killed", if you can help it (and you WILL get killed, just try not to let it happen too much).  It's far better to retreat in this game; constantly if needed; rather than fight to the death.  Every time you die, you give gold and XP to your enimies.

great site for out-of-game reading of skills and items and tinkering with builds and levelling plans.
