Ive had the game for 3 weeks now and not managed to play online once

Check out Monk's PDF for a little more in depth info. If nothing in this post works, then the most likely scenario is that your ISP is blocking or hindering P2P traffic in some way. ISP's have begun doing this in response to P2P file sharing applications such as BitTorrent or LimeWire.
