A Letter To The Editor

Made Me Smile

I'm an avid newspaper reader. First thing every morning I've got to read my paper with my cup of tea.   Yes, I know they usually have a liberal slant to them but I can't help myself.  Today I was reading about the "anti-abortionists" being upset about the recent murder of the abortion doctor.  Why can't they say pro-life?  Would it kill them?   It makes me mad when I see such a leftist slant like that.  I get great satisfaction knowing my son, who is a very conservative editor, changes wording like that in his newspaper to read "pro-life."   He's a good son!

But on the other hand I feel like I get a good balance.  All my periodicals and newspapers come from liberal sources but I try to listen to talk radio and read Fox News online to get the other side of the story....usually they fill in the blanks and give me the whole story, not just pieces of it.

Anyhow, my favorite part of the newspaper is the letters to the editor.  I just get a kick out of reading people's opinions and what not.  Sometimes I can't believe what I'm reading, the ignorance displayed, and other times I just get a good chuckle.  I've been known to write a few myself.

Recently I got a pretty good chuckle from a letter writer in my local newspaper, so I thought I'd print this letter that made my day.

To the editor:

"These are things we should all ponder.

Smart Cars are in and SUV's are out.  Families will squeeze into little cars and little planes.  Consumer products will be transported in little trucks and little trains.  All because of leaders with little brains.

One should not look to Canada as a confidence builder for Obama Health Care when colonoscopies are so rationed that colon cancer is 25 percent higher than in the U.S.

California should legalize marijuana.  It's a guarantee that all liberals will move there.  Hence, the remaining 49 states will turn red.

New methods of torture at Gitmo should include twice-a-day TV access to watch "The View" in the afternoon and Keith Olberman in the evening.

Our president and the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, ACORN, doesn't fall far from the tree.

Torturegate's Nancy Pelosi should undergo a polygraph test.  This is one time the tax-payers won't mind covering the cost.

The right has its Rush-his name is Limbaugh.  The left has Bobby Rush, Illinois congressman and 1960's Black Panther president.

Al Gore's passion for the toxic spaghetti bulb proves that, in his house, "the lights are on but no one's at home."

Since the president has no problem sharing memos that should remain secret to the entire world and to our enemies, then he should have no problem in producing his birth certificate.

Ten people died last year from snowboarding.  No people died from waterboarding.

Did you notice that there were no police dogs and police officers with full riot gear wielding batons and firing tear gas at the Tea Party and Notre Dame protesters?  This anomalous behavior is so foreign to their counterparts on the left who usually resort to violence."

Anti-abortion, and Pro-life -  they're the same. So why gripe over it?

So you hate leftist slant, but love conservative slant? That's hypocritical.

You know, not all those who like pot or are supportive of it's legalization are liberals right? Many conservatives and libertarians are for it. Sorry, that person is showing their ignorance.

whenever you say "anti" it gives a bad connatation.  They use "pro-choice" and "anti-abortion" and you honestly don't see the hypocricy in that?  Are you kidding me?  I thought you were smarter than that.  Why don't they say....."pro-abortion?"

My son, is a conservative but it's not about having a slant.  It's about being fair and balanced.  Something you haven't yet grasped I can see.

Why not say "pro-choice" and "pro-life?" Be fair about it.  Wouldn't that be a much fairer way?  Honestly?

I say "pro-choice" and "pro-life."  I don't say "anti-life."  Even tho I'm constantly reading anti-abortion I don't resort to their tactics.

Have you ever heard or read the term "anti-life in the newspapers?"  I haven't.

I get it KFC. >:( My point is that, if you're going to change the words used in an article - to be more PC essentially - then you're not reporting the story as it is. Yes, fair and balanced, but still...seriously. People gripe about the news when it is presented not as how it really is (label changes, names, etc.) - but yet there are people, the same ones in some cases, that insist like you insist. That the news change the wording as to not...offend, i guess.

One would hope that the average human being is intelligent enough to get beyond the parlance.

Granted, there is the negative connotation, and I agree that they could easily say something else, but there's the fact that not all anti-abortion people are anti-choice; nor are any pro-choice people pro-abortion. There's the connotation that a person who is pro-choice, is hence pro-abortion. Sorry, but I am not in favor of abortion. However, I am in favor of pro-choice (in everything really, not just this topic).

Hence, if you are anti-abortion, then...well, logically and reasonably, it should be assumed that you are just that: anti-abortion; Not, however, anti-choice. Likewise, if you are Pro-choice, logically and reasonably it should be assumed that you are just that: pro choice; Not, however, pro-abortion. I doubt any sane human being would be pro-abortion, in the sense of "woohoo, we're gonna kill some babies!" Maybe that's just me though.

it's all part of the game.  Commercials use this tactic all the time.  If you tell a lie enough times people will start to believe it.  Saying that pro-life people are anti-abortion is not exactly correct terminolgy.  What about those who are pro-life except in certain medical  instances?  Some are pro-life except in the case of rape.  Does that make them anti-abortion?

I think to be fair pro-life and pro-choice is the correct terminology.  To use either anti-life or anti-abortion is a lie and nothing more than game playing.  That is,  trying to make the other side look as badly as they can.

As I said, not all pro-life are anti-abortion and so on so forth. It is a much more complex issue than people seem to think it is.

I think to be fair pro-life and pro-choice is the correct terminology.

Correct or politically correct?

Correct or politically correct?

correct because to be PC is to say "anti-abortion" which is exactly what is going on.

Believe me I'm rarely PC these days.

No, it would be politically correct because the intention is often to not offend any one person or group. If you didn't care about being PC, then you would call it however you want.

Fair and balanced, is a form of PC, in a loose sense.
