weird connection problem!

ok so i just joined a custom game with some other aussies and this is what happened:

1. i connected into the lobby fine(100ms to others)

2. about 4 other people were in the lobby, it was still fine

3. 5 fifth person comes into the lobby...BAM EVERYONES PING GOES UP TO 1600MS

4. i leave the game and reconnect with 5 other people in the lobby (mind you, the person that made everyones ping to me go up, had left when i reconnected)

5. everyones ping is still around 1600

6. i leave.

edit: i have tried this several times, as soon as the 5th person connects BOOM everyones high ping.

are the other people high ping to each other?

could it be your computer/net/router can't deal with that much traffic; is struggling and creating a bottleneck?
