just being stubborn, I know, but...

recently I have purchased a new computer. when I downloaded SKS6 (free) and attempted to open it I was told that SKS6 required windowblinds for it to function. windowblinds is not a free program (my original version was) so I needed to shell out ducats to work the "free" SKS6 program.

when I went to purchase windowblinds I figured that why not purchase the bundledset and get SKS6 pro for about half price. I read all of the data and didn't see anything about needing impulse to download the program so I made the purchase. Well, after SD had taken my money I was informed that I needed to have impulse to download the program. I consider this kind of deceptive.

I emailed sales asking for a stand alone copy as I don't really wish to download impulse but sales has informed me that this is so but that they would be happy to refund that part of the purchase.

I have asked sales if I could install impulse, download my program and then uninstall impulse. I haven't received an answer yet and thought I would throw this out to the forum. can I do this without impacting my SD programs.

I'm am suspious of impulse, the push to get this program out there reminds me of when amex called to tell me that I qualified to make payments instead of paying off my balance each month. no benefit to me only them.

You don't need Impulse to use the programs. You do, however, need Impulse to receive updates.

You can uninstall Impulse after installing, but there is no reason to be "suspicious" of it.

Okay , so can you explain what there is about Impulse that makes you suspicious?  It is a big change from using Stardock Central (SDC) for sure.  As a user of Impulse maybe I can help relieve some of your suspicions.

I'm a non-gamer but use and like Impulse.  It's made my migration of Stardock customization programs (ObjectDesktop Ultimate) to my new Vista computer a snap.

That alone is well worth the cost, oh wait, it free. :O :sun:

Ditto...Impulse does no harm whatsoever.

But I'll bet you have/use Google (not harmful...just harvests your info and markets it).

I think I'll present a new Syndrome to my Colleagues: Impulsophobia ridiculans.

You should not be suspicious of impulse but if still you are, you can remove it after getting your programs but how will you uppdate them?

Google (not harmful...just harvests your info and markets it).

I am not sure how Google harvests our info and Msn and Yahoo search don't. Not sure either why antiviruses or antispywares fail to detect them as a virus or a spyware. :P

Interesting point,gmc2. The Stardock Products page for WindowBlinds  makes no mention of the Impulse requirement. LINK

However, the ImpulseDriven page does clearly state Impulse is required to download and/or update the software. It is a very small footnote.   LINK

Just my two cents here but this information should be prominetly displayed at both locations imho.

ah yes, the answer is that it will do no harm to uninstall impulse after I take what I purchased. I'll work with that.

as to the rest, I don't allow any automated updates (avg is a problem that I haven't figured out how to notify only yet) and don't appreciate programs installing superfluous other programs (i.e. acrobat reader installs google toolbar???) my web surfing experience is not enhanced with flash and you know, I just like it my way and not what some company thinks I want as they are usually wrong.

I'll install impulse and look at the settings to see what control I have. If it provides an "off" switch I'll probably leave it but turn it off.

Seth, thanks for the clinical diagnosis I was concerned that it was a touch of paranoia, glad to hear it is some other type of phobia.

Impulse doesn't install updates on it's own. It will tell you when there is an update, but to install an update you have to click on "Install Update".

I installed impulse and it can be turned off so I'll leave it.

when I first opened it up it did some updating without asking first but there does appear to be a setting that controls that function.

okay, my sniveling about flash and impulse are now moot/mute as I have both of these. so, please provide some topics and I'll choose a few to snivel about over the coming months.

gmc2 there is nothing wrong with being carefull with wihat you download onto your computer.  If folks would be more cautious in doing that they would have alot less computer problems.  Oh, and I agree, I don't don't like or use automated updates either.

I think that over time you will find that Impulse is a handy 'tool' to have. :sun:
