Do Generals spawn minions automatically or do you have to buy idols? Or are idols just extra minions or special minions you can have? And do you have any type of control over these minions? Thanks...
every general gets a type of minion from their skill tree.

The totems are extra minions you can summon if you wish. you can controll all your minions as if they were you. N by default selects you and minions and M selects just minions.

Since this is a minion thread, I would like to ask a question about some items that have a + X something to minions. Does this bonus apply to reinforcements coming out of portals or only the minions generals control?
