My boyfriend could be sterile :(

We have found out that my boyfriend could be sterile. We have heard from few people that an adult that has had chickenpox could, as a result, become sterile:(

He caught chickenpox last month from his godson. He had already caught chickenpox when he was little, but apparently you can have it twice.

I asked if he would mind to be sterile, WHAT A STUPID QUESTION TO ASK, i know :( I guess i blurted that out cuz i didnt know what to say. I mean we've never discussed having kids, we're not in that serious kind of relationship. But i know anyone would feel terrible if they couldnt have children one day.

I told him to ask a doctor's advice and get a check up. He said he probably would. I'm sure he's scared of going for what the results might be.

:(

That's awful, islandgurl. Hopefully he won't be. Do you think he'll actually go in and get checked out (most guys loathe going to the doctor)?

Thanx Ashlee, i'll be prayin too...

Tex, i know it sux big time I asked him to go and check (talked to him over the phone) but he said he'd see and that he had to go now.

I wonder if there's a treatment or something he can do to cure it if he is sterile or if it's definitive. I'm feeling pretty depressed right now thinking about it.

Honey, I think that you have your wires crossed.  It's not chickenpox that can cause sterility in adult males, it's mumps.  Most young adults thses days were immunized against mumps when they were infants.

The most common adverse effect of adult chickenpox (varicella) is pneumonia.  In all the articles I researched, sterility wasn't mentioned once.

I think you might be worrying for nothing.....

Yeah, I was looking it up on webmd and I couldn't find anything like that -- I've heard it, too, but I think dharma's right. Which is good news.

*keep my fingers crossed*

Thank you dharma, i've looked around too, and all i could find was that there was a vaccine against chickenpox. dammit!

But he had quite bad luck. Right after chickenpox he got hepatites A. His skin and eyes were yellow and he had awful abdominal pain.

I hope n pray he is fine NOW....

While that's a little more serious, it's still not known to cause sterility in adult males.  He ought to see his physician though, and get a blood test done to rule out Hep B or C.

You might want to keep an eye on yourself too.....

Well after searching and searching all i found is:

Chickenpox as an adult is more severe than when you're a kid (which i witnessed is true)
Mumps can cause sterility but in only rare cases

So i am really hoping this was just a hearsay and that my boyfriend (and i) doesnt need to stress..

Sorry to hear about your delimma island, but I now excactly what the both of you are going through. I found out with my x-wife in 86 i was sterile, we had been trying to have kids for about a year nothing was working so we had ourself's tested and it was me!!.
My little sperms had no motility that means that they just layed there getting a tan and not trying to swim anywhere. I had a high fever as a child and they said that it boiled my little swimers. long story short she left me about 6 months later. I then met a great gal with two children in 92 and we been together ever since. Please to not give up hope even if you are not serious this might make your relationship stronger there are all kinds of options out there for the both of you or just him. my prayers and wishs are with both of you.

Thank you for your advice tina, i'll talk to him about it.

Manopeace: i think dharma is right too, but i cant help and still worry, my boyfriend seems quite convinced and keeps delaying the visit to the doc

Dharma: He doesnt have hepatitis any more, and i didnt caught it so i guess i'm safe. You can get hepatitis A through contaminated food, he's got such bad luck...

Hey kjay, sorry to hear you've been through so much heartbreak. Thank you for your sweet comment, i hope he isnt sterile. I'm pretty sure he is not. But then again he had unbearable fevers when he was down with chckenpox that i still dont know what to think.

To you all thank you for your comments and your prayers. I will try to get him to see a doctor this week.
