Demigod Lacking Hype?

Is it just me or do you think Demigod might be lacking a bit of hype? I mean this game has nearly everything to make it very successful, but since it has no prequels (and so no big fanbase) I think a bit of hype might be needed. Maybe its just me but I think another epic trailer (like the first one which was released a while back) is needed :) If no one knows about the game then it wont be able to be a huge hit...Again, maybe its just me...

I agree. We're just a mere week and some odd days away from release, and the only ads I've seen for it are very rare in mags like PC Gamer.

Man I had a dream last night that Demigod was released and I was owning with the Rook. :D  It definitely has my interest!

Many amazing games lack hype up until release unless they are:

1. From a huge company (Pretty much Blizzard or EA)

2. Overhyped through an extremely expensive ad program

3. A sequel to a well known game and/or popular series (Zelda, Halo, Half-life)

Also, let's be honest. Most people are up to date on their hobbies. Gaming is ours. When's the last time you seriously gave a crap about some ad? It's bad enough that many ad agencies are shutting down because the only thing the populace is doing with ads is finding ways to shut them out and this is costing millions. Good, in my humble opinion.

There's no point in hype usually, when it's released word of mouth will do the rest. DoTA was this tiny, crappy mod no one knew about until people found out it was fun and it became popular, thus spreading the word. That's pretty much the same with any game that ends up being well known and popular.

Most hyped games set up wrong expectations anyways and then end up hurting themselves when people buy it and don't get the product they imagined.

More Hype = More Money though :) DotA is different....it was a mod, not a game. It didnt matter how popular it was at the start (was not popular at all, it took aaages to become popular from what I heard,,maybe a year+ ?), however Demigod needs a good initial sale, and games are always most popular in their early stages.

And yea, I agree, too much hype = fail and can end up hurting the game...but I think Demigod has TOO little hype. Just think not enough people are aware of it. 90% of the people who buy Demigod arnt going to be scouring the internet for good games and going on forums, and since Demigod has no prequel and has no fanbase, it needs a bit more hype, imo.

If you facebook or whatever make sure to post news about it.  If you frequent other game sites, and you can casually drop a link, please do.  Post game replays to youtube.  Digg news items that DO cover DG.

I think genre-bendinng games (like this one, or Sins) don't get much publicity pre-launch because no news outlet wants to make a bad call.  Better to wait until release, see how it goes and then look brilliant, right?

The fact that it is closely linked (conceptually) with DotA will provide enough word-of-mouth interest in the game.  The rest will be determined by how good the reviews are for the game, from critics and players alike.

If the game gets a lot of good reactions, it will do well enough.  If not, then it won't.

This is an interesting topic.

According to Gamestats, it's in the top 5 "most talked about" games:

http://www.gamestats.com/objects/903/903770/index.html

But in an age with only 1 paper-based PC gaming publication in the US, a good question is, where do people now go to "get hyped"?

Gamecorner is quite popular polish gamers for gamers blog, and the link above is to their "we're playing .... - live report" series. They got access to the beta. I'll translate their conclusion, which is very favouring, below. But the problem is, that there are very few news about the game overal. They posted 3 infos (aside from live report) about the game: one that the game will come out this year, one that it will be delyed and one with trailer. New trailer would do very good for the game popularity in my opinion. Aspecialy if it would be as good as the one that is out.

Translation of conclusion from above link:

You know what? This game is fun. Fresh, cleverly invented, and it plays great. There are as much as eight diverse heroes, each one forcing use of different  tactics. SI is quite demanding oponent, so there is someone to practice with, but games with human players will be actualy what the game is about. In a month? Month it is then. I will happily play again. The gaphics are not bad, and the music is even better.

I realy enjoyed it.

True that Demigod is high up in gamestats, im just not sure how much that means and how they calculate which game is "most talked about". I mean ive never looked at gamestats before it was advertised here...Lets be honest, Demigod is above Starcraft 2, which is obviously talked about 10000x more than Demigod (because of Starcraft1).

Anyway it is a good question Frogboy, where do people "get hyped". The thing that really got me hyped about Demigod was that epic trailer that was released early on - loved that, but im sure for other people it was hearing that it would be in the same genre as DotA that got them hyped, and then for the casuals (very casual) gamers, they probably get hyped by just looking at the screenshots/videos and thinking, "wow this game looks awesome" (which is certainly does, because of the graphics/style of the game).

I guess we will see on April 14th! Good luck Demigod.

Post game replays to youtube.

Does the game save replays in a format that can be viewed independently (like on windows media player etc), or do you have to use a screen capture program like fraps?

You would need to use fraps.  Replays in Demigod are, like in most RTS games, just a list of commands that the players made.

You really think so?  I don't.  I think that you would have many "beta-testers" expecting a demo and when it didn't work perfectly they would slam the game.  The devs would also have to sift through casual player feedback and possible lose the good feedback from serious players.

The other thing I wonder about is how neccessary is pre-release hype.  I mean, if the game on release is good, the first day players will generate (grass-root) news.  That will spark interest in the demo when it is released . .  and THAT will generate even more news.  Right?

Yeah, starcraft 2 is getting talked up a storm but I don't see any direct competition. I, for example, am getting both. The gods know we need more AAA rts games and SCII and Demigod are both very unique when compared to each other.

Anyways, instead of asking for hype let's let them keep their money and let them put it into far more important things, like extra content. We can hype the game by word of mouth, I already have all my friends reving to play it and even bought the game as a gift for one of them. Once the game comes out and can actually be played, I'm sure a lot more people will take an active interest as well. Not everyone likes waiting weeks drooling over a game when they can be playing others. :P

Exactly, that's completly true and I agree.

Theres an easy solution to this....

Give a free copy to Gabe and Tycho of Penny Arcade. If they talk about it in their comic or the news post, you'll have an instant over 9000 page hits.

Well whenever I want to buy a new game i check out the reviews on gamespot, so IMO its important to make sure the major online gaming sites, i.e. gamespot and IGN, do reviews of the game....

IGN/Gamespot will definately do reviews for Demigod - its just a matter of what score it will get.

An "open beta" will generate hype....

I didnt buy RA3 because of the open beta.

I think it's a good idea to post information about this game on the many gaming forums which I have been doing :digichet:

He asked "where do people go to get hype."  Regardless of your opinion of Gamespot and IGN, those are the two most popular places.  PennyArcade webcomic also generates a significant amount of hype - if they mention a game, it's a good bet it's doing well (unless they hate on it, and even then...bad press is better than no press).
