Names mean the same thing here as they do in real life: Nothing until you assign your personality to them in the minds of others. After all, aren't nicknames just that, but with one less degree of association?

Names are initially a simple means of identification, but once you get to know someone, their personality can make that name means all sorts of things to you. Especially true with less common names.
