Best way to play Sins?

Hi, I just bought this excellent game a week ago and am having a lot fun with it. There are some things that concern me though. From what I've been reading, this game often turns into a spamfest with carriers and strike craft. I've also read that several ships are just plain useless. So many people have praised this game highly, but with such stark gameplay imbalances is it really that well put together? Maybe I'm just too used to playing rock, paper, scissors rts games with hard counters, though it seems to me like those should exist in this game too. Anyway, enough of my gripping.

Basically, I want to introduce this game to my friends, so I'm curious what you think the best setup is. Maybe certain settings, or mapsize, or mods would make this game shine more, and if so what do you think they are? What is the best way to experience Sins?

For single or multiplayer?

In general though, despite some complaining on the forums, carrier spamfests don't work all that well on experienced players due to the game having some very good mechanisms that scale up with the number of strikecraft (like the Kol's Flak Burst that just hits everything in its rather large radius, the more strikecraft the more it hits, or the Advent's Halycon that pushes all strikecraft away and also damages them). These make it pretty easy to knock out masses of fighters/bombers and leave the spammer a sitting duck with the hostile construction penalty.

And there really aren't useless ships. They all have a purpose, though some are more specialized than others and may not always see as much action :P

Firstly if AI is involved: LOCKED TEAMS

The diplomacy is being worked on for expansion 2, until then it doesn't add any fun to the game.

Regarding imbalances, as far as I'm concerned this game is as balanced as I could possibly hope for and if you read differently you are getting quite a false impression.

Heretic. :P I love playing FFA games. To each their own.

I'd certainly play the game on locked teams when learning.  Unlocked teams with the AI can be annoying as heck if you're just picking up the basics.

There is no right or wrong way to play Sins.  This is one of those great titles that gives you all the tools you need to create your own epic story of interstellar conflict.  As such, I recommend just trying all sorts of different set-ups.  I've been fooling around with different combos since I got the game and even the ones that didn't work out all that well still proved to be great fun.  Just consider every game as a seperate chapter of victory or defeat in the larger Sins universe!
