How do you remove starbase systems from the Empire Tree?

I recently started playing entrenchment, and I noticed that I can't remove systems that have starbases from my empire tree. This becomes very annoying when playing very long AI games in huge galaxies, where you have a ton of starbases. Is there a way to prevent this, via MOD or UI option?

Select the starbase, and hit the 'pin' button over the empire tree (it also serves as 'unpin').  (EDIT:  Unfortunately, there's no way to turn off auto-pin on starbases).
