Optimal number of opponents

Haven't been able to find a thread on this already. but would like to see some opinions, please.

What do you think are the optimal number of opponents for each map size?

For example, on a tiny map, is it best to select just one (i.e. tiny map is for one-on-one duals) or would you stretch to two or even three?

 What about other map sizes?

 Thanks for your input.

Tiny(3) Small(5) Medium(7), anything above can go for maximum(s)... but these figures are more about how *i* prefer my settings - not an "optimal" configuration since every other options can alter the context in great lengths (Habitable, Number of Minors, Tight clusters, Research pace, etc).

I even get my hands dirty once in awhile with a one-on-one showdown on Immense Maps if i'm in a mood for a micro-managing nightmare of hundreds of planets to cope with & everything else that ensues. o_O

Hi!

IIRC the AI is optimized to work with 5-10 planets. Unfortunately it's hard to predict how many planets you can expect just from stating galaxy size, because there's a complication with additional variables: density of planets, amount of habitable planets and amount of extreme planets.

From my game experience with all-abundant games I'd say 1 to 2 AIs would get a "fair" number of planets in tiny galaxy and 3-4 in small. Medium could probably hold about 6, and from there on you could use full amount of AIs. YMMW though, because planet distribution with regard to HW placements quite often isn't really fair.

Want some heck_of_a_ride gameplay situation?

Try the Civilization OCC (One city only!) challenge -ala GalCiv2 principles.

Remain on YOUR Homeworld only until the whole Colony rush (for them AIs anyway!) is over.

Then, go for it -- good luck, young obiwan. :D

Knightshifter,

I think a number of variables come into play, including which version of the game you are playing. For myself I like huge or larger maps, and I stick in 9 opponents and 8 minor races, the most possible. The advantage is that you get many more tech trading opportunities, and the opportunity for the most unique techs (if playing TA) this way and if you play your cards right you can keep them all battlng each other the entire game. So on big maps, I'd say load up as many opponents as you can on the larger maps.
