How to make a multi color symbol

Ok I got a question for every one I have just started playing Sins and I was playing the computer and noticed they had a multi colored symbol. I was wandering how I could make mine do that or is it just something the computer AI can do.

Sounds like you were attacking the milita on a given planet, not the AI. This is done to denote the militia ships vs enemy...
