Venting on the Current Beta State

Venting on the Current Beta State

So, I just want to say that trying to play this game online is just aggravating.  Yes I know its a "Beta," but I preordered the game thinking I would actually be able to Beta test the game with other players to balance and make Demigod a great game.  This however is impossible.  If you actually do get a game going since people rarely try, you are bombarded with 10,000 desyncs in each game.  Also, it can take up to four tries to get a single game going with disconnects.  I honestly have to say I am disappointed I preorded the game.  I like it and it seems fun, but it has been more of an aggravation than anything.  I have beta tested games before, and Demigod's Beta phase has been far worse than any other game I have tested.  It seriously reminds me of an alpha build.  Demigod's alpha build was actually more stable than their beta build.  I know I'm going to have people say its a beta you can't make these kinds of judgements you preordered the game for a "Beta."  Honestly I don't care because this Beta test has been far more aggravating than any other I have taken part of simply because you can't test the core part of the game.  Sure you can play against AI, but they are honestly retarded or simply level 20x faster than you.  I really hope Beta 3 actually works, and I can play a game against more than 1 person.

I'm concerned at well.  My impression after playing the 2D is that there's no way this game gets released in April.  Unless Stardock makes a huge leap in the upcoming 3D beta, this game will be shipped with bug/issues galore.  :(O

The first time I played Demigod, 1.  I couldn't join game and 2.  my frame rate drops to litterally 1fps.  So I can't join a game and if I do, its not playable because there's some memory leak issue. :(

Sounds like some of you would have absolutely HATED the Sins of a Solar Empire beta.

Demigod has been extremely straight forward compared to Sins of a Solar Empire. We were making major gameplay changes right into Gamma.

Sins of a Solar Empire, as in, the game that won more game of the year awards this past year than any other game.

Our beta process on our games is extremely rough. They are (as someone else put it) REAL betas.

The Elemental beta will be far rougher than the Demigod beta btw.

Well, I'm pretty sure Fallout 3 received more critical acclaim last year (2008) than any other game.  That aside though, Sins did get good reviews (9.0 from Gamespot is quite good).

However, I haven't heard much buzz about Sins as a multiplayer competitive game.  Which is fine - it's great as a single player RPG, and probably has a small core multiplayer community (I imagine).

But Demigod has been framed (by the developers themselves) as a competitive multiplayer RTS.  So if this were meant to be a single player RTS-type-game sort of like Sins, I wouldn't be so worried about the myriad of gameplay depth and multiplayer connectivity issues that are currently going on with Demigod.  I'd be worried...but not nearly so much.

I just don't think you can compare the development of Sins to Demigod if the goals for both games are really as different as they would appear to be.

It would be nice to see Release date pushed back farther to really see some skills get worked with but oh well =)

Just remember that not only does programming costs time, but also money. If a Demigod costs 100,000 USD I'd like to see how much a skill costs.

So the quality and longetivity of a game should be sacrificied so they can save some costs in making the game?

No, just don't expect them to go and spend so frivilously. It's not like their wallets are as bottomless as the US treasury.
