How to continue a multiplayer (online) saved game?

A friend and I were playing tonight. He had network problems so dropped several times. I tried reloading the saved games, but it wouldn't let him in, saying something about he didnt have the needed files or something.

What were we doing wrong? Anyone know the trick to this?

You need to email him the save file. When a player joins the game checks that he has the save file, if he does not it boots him.
