starbases constructed on resources

I just constructed a starbase on a military resource that gave me 5% bonus, but the sector had no habitable systems. Is it wiorth doing so ? Because I dont see 5% as a good reason to do it.

heck yeah! those resources cover your whole civilization. Now go send some more constructors, and put on more mining modules .

a starbase with all the mining modules adds ~70% in whatever resource you're mining. so yes, it's worth it. in fact, if you don't seize and defend every resource you come across you will die very quickly on the higher levels.

anyone found a lifeforce resource yet?

Resources are a key element to success as Horatio has pointed out. Find them, grab them and defend them at all costs. In my current game I have the only existing resource (that I know of) under tight control. Fully loaded production starbase is surrounded by three (offensive, defensive, and trade) ancillary starbases. You should see what the League of Planets is throwing at me trying to recover that single resource.

I absolutely love this game, havent had the "one more turn" feeling since I dont know when!

You know all these affects stack right? There's really no need to specialize a starbase.

There absolutely is a need to specialize. Lets see you cripple that production base before I can get another constructor in position to recover any loses.

A key element to defense is to distribute the targets of opportunity. If I only have a single starbase in that position and the I-League drops into town with a few battleships, there is a chance that I will lose control of that resource. However, if I multiple bases in place around that resource I can soften the blow.

As well, there will be times when loading up a single starbase is not feasible. Situations where the UP limits the amount of modules you can add to a starbase.
I strongly disagree with you on this one, there are lots of reasons to specialize a starbase.

Whoa, let me get this straight: when you upgrade a starbase that sits on a resource, then the added bonus to that resource spreads across your whole empire? For example, usually when you build a cultural add-on to a starbase, it only directly affects the sector that the base is in. But if the base is sitting on the influence resource, then your whole empire gets the bonus?

yea resources are VERY important, just one morale resource can be a 70% bonus to every single planet. I grab these as early as i can, and get a few battle ax's on them to defend.

And i also prefer to have 3 specialised Starbases, i find once you get to the later stages of the games the Ships are far more powerful than the starbases defense.

Cultural add-ons to a starbase expand and magnify the influence you exert on the sector the starbase is in, with some flow on effect into adjacent sectors.
Mining a resource makes the benefit of that resource available to your entire race. Adding additional modules that enhance the mining of that resource increases the benefit.

Other modules, such as bonuses to attack, movement, defense, repair, military/social production are only applied to that sector, regardless of if they're sitting on a resource.
Or, that's how it's supposed to work. ;)
