Does Not Work, Ever

Freezes Computer

Hello, I'm sure you have heard this before but these dreams do not work. I am capable of running windows Vista Premium on my computer but anytime I try to load a dream my computer freezes. I have tried everything. Loaded codecs, I have Pinnacle Studio 9, full version that has an MPEG 2- Video Decoder but does not work. Please, Please help, this is very frustrating. What to do, what to do! HELP!!! I am using Windows XP - Media Center. Wouldn't have Vista if my life depended on it.

I have just now found a stable Dream. Mars, why this one when all others fail. It's like 133MB. For some reason the small ones work and the larger the file the worse it gets.

one dream working makes it sound like a codec problem.  Try bouncing box.  What happens there?

Read this about codec support: https://www.stardock.com/products/deskscapes/faq.asp and try the codec tool to see if things are ok.

You really need some other decoder though, pinnacle studio 9 is ancient, and quite frankly, not even their more recent versions of the codec have been very stable as far as I know.

Small files work but the larger they get they don't. Now this MARS scape I downloaded last night works great, just don't know why. I downloaded codecs from nirsoft but is there something further I need to do to associate them with my Dreams. Thanks you folks are being very helpful! Can't find a freeware decoder, do you know of any good ones?

If you can run the Mars dream then it looks like your able to run dreams that are created from WMV videos. Muckyman mostly uses WMV and Mars was created by him. If you want to confirm this try downloading other dreams created by him as he has made alot of nice ones. His gallery can be found here.

I have created a couple with WMV but I mostly use MPEG2 as they use a lot less CPU to run.

You can get a free MPEG2 codec by downloading and installing Virtual Dub. I would uninstall all of the codec packs that you have installed trying to fix this before installing. Once installed you should be able to run MPEG2 dreams.

If you still can't, you may have a codec installed that's conflicting with one of your other codecs. In this case you can install Installed Codec to help you figure out which one is causing the conflict. I would use it to disable your codecs one at a time until you find the culprit.

Good luck.

Just a question, I see that you have used this WMV Videos site in other answers also. But all it does is bring up a website to buy something. Can you please explain? Am i missing something?
