did the AI get less intelligent

During the beta test for 1.1 i had a usual single player game against a set number of unfair computer players. On average it would take 12-15 hrs to win... since the upgrade from the beta to the 1.1 the same settings give me no challange at all. The games last only a couple of hrs and at no point do i feel rushed or challanged. Does anyone know if there were some ai changes made that would account for this? As well the stellar geography seems to consistently have me in excellent starting position to attack or defend from only one direction... any thoughts?

I've noticed that the AI fights amongst themselves more now which if you aren't being overly agressive might explain why they don't feel you atre a major threat.

I think in the normal version, 1.05 to 1.00, the AI normally forms alliances, like modern day NATO, which make teh game harder, especially if you'r not in any of them.  In the 1.1 version, teh advanced AI is samrt enough to recognize superpowers before they's fully born, and try to teake them out earlier to stabilize their own empire's place in teh world, universe whatever.  This could lead to the uber-hard AI dying before you can even take a swing at them, or it could lead to less empires in the game at large, which means teh painful mop-up stage is averted.

Which is what i think he was trying to say

As for the geography, that could boil down to luck.

However, it could be that the AI attacks other factions than their own. So they act within Canon of SOASE

I have noticed that both my victories in 1.1 were the result of the AI surrendering with 3 or so planets left, following me utterly destroying the remnants of their fleet.

thanks for all the responses. B/C i never know when i can play or for how long i cant get into online play. Does anyone have any suggestions to increase the difficulty?

Not to increase difficulty, but try recording your next game andthen trying to see if you can find anything in the replay that might explain what the AI gets up to thats giving you a break.
