Sacred 2 always crashes on startup

I cannot get this game to run. It activated just fine, but afterwards it crashes on running every time. First, specs:

Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.3Ghz
3GB DDR2-800
GeForce 8800 GTS 640mb
Audigy 2
Vista 32-bit SP1

Next, here is what happens: when I double click on the icon, after a few seconds I get a window saying Sacred 2 has stopped responding with some text/code/numbers below. The details say:

I have thus far tried the following:

a) Installing OpenAL with links provided on these forums. I have tried running the game with –skipopenal

b ) I have tried older video card drivers and newest whql ones (178.24)

c) I have installed latest DirectX

d) I have installed MSVCRT

e) I have tried running the game with –noconnect

Thinking that maybe I have something installed that’s conflicting, I wiped my C drive and reinstalled windows and available updates and drivers. Fired up the game and same thing

Actually, on the clean install of windows, the error message is different, says Sacred 2 - GameServer has stopped responding. If I use the -noconnect option, I get a black screen with the sacred logo in the middle and a bunch of green text on the bottom left. When it gets to connecting to local server, the green text flickers up and down indefinately.

However all that is without the game being activated. Once I activate the game, even using -noconnect does nothing.

Formatted yet again, this time I installed my old XP Pro. Installed graphics drivers, sound drivers, latest directx, activated the game and ran it. Lo and behold the game runs. However all the menu items are blank and it asks for a Loka-ID when im exiting. So it runs under XP in a glitched state, and doesnt work at all under Vista. Am I missing something here?
