OS: Windows XP 64-bit Edition (running from EIDE internal drive (C Smile )

latest ati drivers: released 8/20/08 have been installed.

This system runs FA and World in Conflict with little to no lag. (graphics not usually set to highest, but most things set pretty high)

First Attempt: Slightly laggy video intro... OK, concerned but we hit ESC and are treated to the menu. Considering the video being a bit sluggish we decide to go to Video options and drop the settings down a bit. We click on the "Options" menu, choose "Video" and find that the game has set everything to highest presets. Not unusual... We move the mouse over to the drop down list and.....

FROZEN... not just demigod... the whole PC... can't Alt+tab, can't hit the windows key, CTRL+ALT DELETE doesn't work... Not even my GE keyboard's built in POWER button.

2 minutes later...

Hard Shut Down.

Reboot.

Second Attempt: We make into the settings menu and back out without incident. Everything is now set to "Low Fidelity" or whatever. Fine, I came for testing and gameplay, not for flashy stuff.

Now... into the Multiplayer... LAN... no games to be seen... Ok, its 1am EST. Click "Host". type "test" into the text field and...

FROZEN

5 minutes later (we're more hopeful this time)...

I know : it happened to me twice, on the day of the beta's release (4 Sept.), but in my case, it was the file-extraction phase (after the Impulse-download phase) which made my C:\ drive crash (= frozen HDD red light on PC tower + loss of mouse & keyboard + necessity to press the reset button). I solved the problem by closing a few WinXP background processes.

I really don't know what is the cause of your problem, but you might find useful to try one or more of these troubleshooting approaches (in any order) :

* Defragment your C:\ drive, and then, run the drive's error-checking programme (will require a reboot to execute)

* Create a Windows XP System Restore Point, and then run a Registry Cleaner, and have it fix the Windows Registry errors it finds (I regularly run 3 reg cleaners, because I have yet to find one cleaner that catches all the errors by itself.)

* Execute total antivirus + antimalware scans (in case a hidden bugger is running interference from the deep shadows)

* Before launching the game, open the Windows Task Manager and close as many background processes & "services" as prudently possible (In my recent case, that might have been the solution to my own problem : a background process might have been interfering with the file-extraction process -- I suppose.)

Those are well-known, basic approaches, and doing them can't hurt. I can't think of anything else for the moment. Good luck.

Do you have a logitech webcam, by any chance? In that case, there's something that causes problems with the supcom engine. I'll look it up if you do.

1. No I do not have a Logitech webcam.

2. I am told that Demigod uses Pixel Shader 3. Is this true? If my Pixel Shader 2 video card ran supcom just fine, why should I have to buy a new one for demigod which is supposed to be MORE optimized?

xthetenth, if someone has the logitech webcam it shows up in their dxdiag under video. ctrl+f logitech is easy to tell

I love my card... I want to get another year out of it. Its never enocuntered a game it couldn't handle (if my other hardware could keep up) until now

Demigod shaders run on Shader Model 2, and scales down to Shader Model 1 on lower fidelity settings. Your general system specs look fine, and if you can run Supreme Commander, you should be able to run Demigod. Problems like what you are describing, in my experience haven't been the easy ones to track down, and more often than not system specific.

If you have the time, narrow down the scope of what may it is running on your system. Sorceresss post above is a great first start in troubleshooting problems like this.

To note, I've seen a few other people mentioning similar problems with ATI X800's here in the forums, which may or may not be a factor.

I can only give suggestions that might set you in the right direction right now, and hopefully you'll find something useful after this. If you find something on your end that gives you more of a clue to what's going, please post here! Otherwise, we are still in Beta, and this problem if it is on our end, hopefully will addressed in the near future.
