This might sound stupid but i have no idea how to play this game. yeah i can run around with my character and shoot at things, but thats as far as i got. what's the goal (apart from "kill the opponents") and how do you reach it?. some sort of manual out there?

Almost all game manuals were written as soon as the game reaches the final stage. Because there may be some big differences between Beta and Final.

just a quick n dirty explanation of what is going on in this game 
The goal is to destoy the opposing stronghold without losing yours.
ok, and how do you control the numerous units that come out of the gates? or do you only control your hero?
The idea is that you only control your hero. Without heroes, the battle between the smaller units is in balance. It's your job to tip the balance in your favour. The other type of characters (unplayable in this demo) are called generals, and they'll more directly influence the smaller units.
Not entirely true--generals won't really have much influence on creeps (although from what I've gleaned from the lua files, Vampire Lord will spawn his stuff by killing mobs, and maybe Oak will spawn some of his that way, too), beyond maybe Sedna healing 'em. They spawn their own units.

played a game with a friend yesterday and although this is still a beta it was *SO* much fun. oh my god i'm gonna waste hours playing it...
