wormhole problem

i know they are suposed to be automatic but i cant seem to use wormholes and i cant make my ships move to planets in other systems. The only way i can get my ships into another star system is by moving them normally, which takes hours, i really want to solve this so i can play the game properly and enjoy it, any ideas?

You need to research a tech to travel through wormholes and one ship should go through it first to see where it leads.

how do i do that? i cant get any ships through it at all, not even a scout, and my allies have been through it so i know where it goes, so which tech is it?
