Taking a long break...

Just to let you know I've not been on WinCustomize for the last two weeks, and I will not be back again in the near future. Call it a break, sabbatical or holiday, after nine years in skinning I think I've earned some time off.

I know a lot of people contact me to sort out moderation issues, or ask advice about the site. Please don't from now on, there are plenty of moderators on the site who can help. They are a friendly bunch you know, and there just for you - you only have to ask ;)

Things have changed a lot for me over the last eighteen months. Some will know the story, some will not. So I'll tell it again for those who don't.

December 2006, I injured my back at work, having been told to a job I wasn't trained for or capable of doing. By the following February I was unable to walk and on morphine patches. I had a prolapsed disc lower back which required five months of physiotherapy to get me walking again. I was off a couple of weeks in June, and when I got back to work the Company I worked for was in difficulty...

Then, with all that, I was back at work only ten days when I was in a serious car accident. My car was trashed by a lorry. The emergency services had to cut me out of the car, but fortunately, apart from whiplash and a few bruises, I was mostly ok.

I went on holiday in September. I got back to find my father in hospital with a heart attack, also, waiting for me, was a letter from a firm of solicitors telling me the company I worked for was insolvent - so I had no money and no job. The only money I had for a month was what I had in my wallet...

I started work for an accounting partnership in December, but they also got into difficulty. At the beginning of March this year I was out of work again. This time though, only for two days. I got the opportunity to work as a Finance Officer for a Sixth Form college (16-18 year olds - don't know what you call those colleges in other countries). It's a really good job...

Throughout all this time I was sole carer for my father. He was 88 in May this year. Having been in and out of hospital all year he wasn't all that well. I got back from a weeks holiday in June to find he had passed away.

So where are we now? Well, I'm free! At last I can do what I want, when I want. I don't get home to a mess or lots of work, or constant complaints - like "I don't like this gravy, you've ruined my dinner..." hehe, that's 88 year olds for you. I have money too - the compensation payout for my back injury was only £1k below the maximum ever, plus, shortly I will be getting a huge sum for my car accident...

Things have not looked so positive in a long time. It's like a whole new me. I'm the same age as Madonna. She is always re-inventing herself, well, I'm doing the same.

I'm completely refurbishing the house. So far I'm up to £7k on new furniture and carpets. Hmmm, the smell of real oak in my dining room is amazing - I've never had anything like this before. Wow!

So what am I going to do next? Dunno really - suggestions welcome! To paraphrase Ferris Bueller: "It's not a question of what am I going to do - it's a question of what am I not going to do..."

In the immortal [?] words of the Mental As Anything song....'If you leave me can I come too'?

Holidays are grossly underrated.

I had one last in 1984....one of those sit-under-a-tree-at-a-camp-ground-read-a-book-and-drink-beer-till-the-pub's-open kind.

Since then it's been an annual stand-on-the-side-of-a-F1-track-for-4-days-and-concentrate-responsibly kind that pales in comparison.

Have a GREAT holiday, Mike....and keep one foot up....just for me....;)

Very sad for all here at WC who have had your good council. I am happy for you and the chance you have to explore your future and get a sense of who you are now and what life's little journey has taught you thus far. Be well Mike. God Bless.

Sorry to hear that your leaving for a while. Things just won't be quite the same around here without you. Please don't stay away long. From the bottom of my heart, I hope all goes well for you and you finally get that "me" time that so many of us don't have but desperately need. You'll have to shoot us some pics of that house of yours when it's all done!!
Take care my friend!

There is always a silver lining...good to hear things are looking up for you. Have fun.

Well, I'd like to extend my condolences on the passing of your Dad...no matter how difficult he'd become. Actually, when it comes to losses, you've had quite a few. Prima facia, you sound as if you've adjusted to it all pretty well. Congrats on that as it would have sent lesser men to the Zoloft farm.
You're absolutely right about taking time off to evaluate what it is you really want. You might want to avoid a career in the SAS or SBS with your back being what it is, but I'd say short of that the world's yer oyster, mate!
Don't forget to put something away for a rainy day, and don't forget your mates here at WC!
Have some fun! There's more to life than oak (like cedar!).

I didn't know all that was happening, and I'm impressed that you've managed to keep a positive attitude through it all. I'm glad things are looking up for you! Have fun with whatever you chose to do, but stop back in now and then to keep us posted on what you're up to.  :D

Michael, you helped me many times over the years. I took care of my Dad till he passed away and now I do the same for my 82 years old mother that is in the Hospital with 2 broken knees at the moment ...I cooked for her every day and heard about my ' salty ' gravy on many occasions..so I know just what you went through. Take care and enjoy life - skinning is just a hobby and you can always return...and maybe you will just find out that you don't need a hobby now... be thankful " Life is good " now, and have fun...

M8, time for you to enjoy life!
Go places that will stay with you for the rest of your life, see things that few people will be able to see.
Dare you to go on a journey to the untouched rainforest of guyana! :P
Seriously though, go ahead and spoil yourself!

It'll be a little quieter around here without you, but we understand so take the time you need for yourself to rebuild, recoup, whatever it is that you want to do. :)

You know, of course, it'd be appreciated if you'd pop in every once in a while to say hi and let us know that you're OK. OK, all the best to you and take care. :)
