Give a noob a hand

 So I just picked up this game the other day and i have played about 4 games, all with exactly the same result; I do ok for a little while, fending off pirates and enemy attacks while I build up and max out my fleet as much and as fast as I can. Then, somewhere around hour 3 or so, the enemy attacks with such a huge armada that I have no chance of defeating him. If I have 2 capitol ships, he has 6, if I have 10, he has 20. I play on easy opponent, small map and I'm getting my ass handed to me so badly that I have simply no clue what to do.

I'm getting my planets bumped up and producing with metal/crystal as far as they can while focusing on size of fleet and ship improvements. I see no faster, better way to improve but I'm still getting wiped out completely on easy.

That's a noob to do?

Im not a great player, so I can't help you but just be thankful you didn't accidently right "job" at the end of the title.

I would watch replays, but where off the internet can I get good ones?

I started off playing Easy Defender, so the opponet is not aggressive and attack me head on.

Also the max # of Capital Ships is 16.

If you are getting killed in a small map, try a bigger one with more opponents, and set it so that you start off with an ally to take some of the heat off you.

That I don't know
The game does auto record matches, so if you go to Singe Player - Watch Game - Change Save Type, you should be able to watch what the AI is doing.

Or you could play multiplayer a few times.

Since the enemy attacks you at hour three, consider attacking him at hour two! Do not wait until your fleet is at maxium. It only has to be bigger and better than his, or at least able to do damage to his empire before he can stop you. In other words, do not let him get to the point of building that big, overwhelming fleet.

Historical example: General McClellen in the Civil War, who missed multiple opportunities to end the war early on because he always wanted to wait until he had everything set up perfectly.

Your forces DO NOT have to be larger then his, if you can get some of the specail effects friggates offer you can be much stronger then him.

Research is a strong decider on who wins.

spend less money researching. instead of researching stuff so your fleet never dies just send in wave after wave of small to moderate fleets. He will likely be busy with other AI opponents perceiving you as the lesser threat and send his fleets to the other side of the galaxy.

Hit his commerce first take out his supply then he can't have huge fleets anymore 3 hours in.(save being on the unfair setting)

When all is said and done the gaming experience is far more rewarding if you don't turtle yourself and wait until you have a huge fleet. Small surgical strikes are fun and cost affective. More so than waiting it out for a few hours and he comes to give you the business.

Indeed. Hit and run tactics can work very well against the AI. Also bribe the pirates to annoy the AI opponent in question, and time your raids to occur just as the pirate raid is being engaged.
