Can someone explain "Locked teams"?

I'm clueless on what it means when a team is "locked" in the new game options.

It means that the team settings you arrange going into the game can't be altered during the game. If you set two teams of three players each, those players will be locked into those teams for the duration of the game.

In a game against the AI, it also disables diplomacy.

basically locked teams means you don't have any of the diplomacy missions or anything the races that start off on your team stay on your team untill they are killed or you win. instead of unlocked teams even your allies if you don't complete their missions can turn on you and attack.
