Which game to play first?

Hello folks,

I'm considering purchasing Galciv 2 (plus expansions) but I was wondering where to start?

Should I play through the original game first and then each expansion in turn or should I begin playing the game from the latest expansion?

Can I play the original game campaign using the latest expansion pack? (and hence all the bugfixes, tweaks etc)

Many thanks for any help you can provide :)

Definitely play TA from the get go, its by far the better game. They do good bundle deals so you can "catch up" re versions of the game. Once you get all three, you'll get all the updates for all of them, so whatever Campaign you decide to play, it'll be updated with that Version.

The Campaigns are not "free standing", they only run within the Version environment that originally created them. Game enhancements/bug fixes are - as such - not "backwards compatible", and only apply to the Version for which they were created. Some can have a knock on effect, for example you must have DA loaded to run TA, so some DA fixes can have a knock on effect.

However, bottom line, dont worry about it, you'll be fine, the update process is very good. Just let the Stardock automatic update process do its thing and all is well.

TA is the way to go. I wouldn't go back and play the campaign in DL because it feels like a completely different game than DA and TA. You could, however, "get away" with playing the campaign in DA because it plays similar to TA, but the changes to the tech trees in TA take the game to a whole new level.

Really, this game isn't about the campaign, so Zydor is spot on. TA is the way to go.

Reference (cause I still get them confused when people use axronyms)
GalCiv II: Dread Lords (DL)
GalCiv II: Dark Avatar (DA)
GalCiv II: Twilight of Arnor (TA)

Don't skip the DL campaign because of the changes, skip it because it's bad. If DL rules were still current, I'd still recommend avoiding that campaign.

Adjusting to TA after spending some time on the DA campaign isn't hard.
