not played since gc2 original, summary of changes?

hiya,

I used to play a fair bit of Galciv, and galciv2, but I took a long break. I'm back now and have bought both the expansion packs. I'm a bit confused as to whats new though, what I Have noticed :

terror stars back (from galciv1)
asteroid fields - mine them for resources, can upgrade the mines with tech, anything else?
some new techs and race specific techs
customisable races

I'm hoping I've missed a lot of stuff, as that seems a bit short? Oh, new campaigns too I suppose, but to be honest I dont spend any time on those.

You have missed quuite a lot. There are some threads on here with complete lists. Since you mentioned Terror Stars I know that you are playing TA. I'm guessing that you need to know what was added to DA as well since DL was the "original".

I'll summaraize for you as best I can:

- Race specific super abilities.
- Korath and Krynn as new races
- Anomolies that respawn
- The whole fusion generator branch of the tech tree (there were no structires in DL that added a percent bonus to a planet's production)
- Completely different espionage system
- Defending ships get to fire back even when they are destroyed on the first volley. (Except against Arcean super ability).

Thats about all off the top of my head. I never really played DL. If you have specific questions it would be easier to tell you what you want to know.

To say that there are "some new techs and race specific techs" would be a bit of an understatement. Many of the tech trees are radically different from each other. Other things you missed:

Improved graphics, improved performace, improved AI.
Planets that require special technology to be inhabitable
Racial super abilities
New races: Krynn and Korath
A new espionage system
Mega Events (random, often gamechanging events)
Immense galaxy size
Fleet support modules

This thread is a good primer on the Twilight changes in particular

thanks guys, the thread you linked is very detailed, a bit overwhelming in fact ;)

i've only spent about 2 hours playing the new updated galciv2, I bought both expansions, so it's TA now right?

i'm a bit unclear on the power plants. A factory just adds x amount to a planets production, but a power plant adds a % to the whole planet production? is that right?

Thats correct. Keep in mind that they are only one-per-planet structures. For instance, the last one in that branch is the Quantum Power plant, it gives a 30% boost to the planet's production. The ones before it have lesser bonuses and may not be worth building instead of another factory.

So if you have at least 3 factories, a quantum power plant will be worth building. I believe that DA without any patches actually gave a 100% production bonus for the Quantum Power plant. It was nerfed for obvious reasons.
