Farms? (And a few other beginner questions)

Farms? (And a few other beginner questions)

First off, I want to say I'm completely new to GalCiv; I had heard a great deal of good things about it so I went last night and purchased the complete bundle with DL, DA, and ToA.

I loaded up ToA, watched a few of the basic tutorials and started a game as the Terrans, but it seems that I can't build any farms. I've looked through the tech trees under Research and I found Xeno Farms (which I was able to build once I had researched that far) but nothing about basic farming--isn't that something I should have by default? I loaded up the original afterwards and gave it a quick try with the same settings and in there I could build basic farms with no problem... am I missing something here?

If I have the complete bundle, is there any reason to start in order or would it be better just to play on the newest expansion? And would you recommend playing through the campaigns first or does it really matter?

From what I've seen and heard, I really think I will love this game--once I figure out what the hell I need to do and how the hell I'm supposed to do it =)

Subtle difference a full quote can make - mind you at 95% Tax I'm surprised they didn't put you on the stretching rack

I think they did. My arms hurt.

But then I am a civilised Terran *snif*

Ha! Well, as an ex-pat convict (two centuries removed) I did spend a few years on the ol' dart, attempting to gain some civility, but failed miserably. Although I must admit missing the inns and ale houses dotted around the country-side, drinking the local concoction and actively engaging in sometimes almost bizzare 'Fawlty Tower' like circumstances with the local inn-keeper, haggling for a room. ;)

Anyway at the mention of the words "slave pit" I always get a vision of Charleton Heston in the Roman Slave Quarry in Judea cracking rocks (movie - Ben Hur )

yea, yea, I know - "Charlton who?"

Last time I managed to watch that marathon all the way through was back in the 20th Century, 'bout two days before transferring to the Northern Hemisphere, drinking the local bev's and watching the cricket. The movie was slightly shorter.

Another question that popped up in the course of this game... how do I form alliances? I researched that tech, but all I seem to be able to do is offer/demand economic and research treaties.

Pretty much as pointed out by SanChonino. Another semi-decent indicator seems to be if the other race approaches you with a free lunch (offer with no strings attached).

How far into the game were you when they zapped you?RegardsZy

I wasn't too far in... I didn't keep track of the exact length but it was no more than two years in. I had focused on trading and culture techs so I only had the first few basic military techs so my handful of fighters couldn't put up much of a fight.

2) Your relations with that race need to be 'close'. Nothing less - friendly doesn't work, and certainly nothing lower than that. When you look at the race relations screen, look at what you get pluses and minuses for, and focus on getting more pluses with any given race if you want an alliance.

Once you've both got the tech and your relations are 'close', sidle up alongside and ask for that race's hand in alliance marriage. (It's on the diplomacy screen, with those economic and research treaties). It won't show up as an option unless those two stipulations are satisfied.

I'm working on wooing the Alterians and I can't seem to get my relations above 'Warm' even though I've given an economic and research treaties, my diplomatic techs, and even some money. Does it just take a long time or am I doing something wrong here?

An alarm bell just went off in my mind. I have not got into the mechanics and do's and dont's of the research/economic treaties, it would be good if someone who has used them (extensively) could comment on them. I have heard there is as always two sides to using them, particularly on timing and understanding exactly what they - really - do.

Might even be worth a separate thread, I suspect there are many like me who dont - really - know the research & economic treaties and would benefit from such a discussion.

Hmmm . . . without knowing exactly what it says for the pluses and minuses on your race relations, it'll be hard to define exactly what you need to do.

Some of the reasons they might not be so keen on you, however, are:

--Either your military is way stronger or way weaker than theirs. Either way, other races either look at you as a warmonger or a sissy for that.

--You might be friendly with another race they hate or are at war at.

--They might just think you're too big and aggressive.

--They might not like your ethical alignment. The Altarians are the hard-core sissy good guys of the game, so they are hard to woo if you're not 'good' either, and especially hard to snooker if you're evil.

--A couple of trade routes with a race will do wonders for your relations. If you're not currently trading with them, start doing so ASAP.

Anyway, that's just some ideas. If you want some more concrete ideas, remember what your pluses and minuses are next time you're in your game and let us know. We can be more specific that way.

Definitely open some trade routes with them. It'll help a lot.

Also... (cue the drumroll)

I'm new to the game, but giving a race that you want to be friendly with diplomatic techs (other than Alliances) seems like a very bad idea to me.

Why? Because you can get minuses to your relationship for them being more "sophisticated" diplomatically than you are.

That means that giving them techs that increase their diplomacy rating is seriously working against what you want to accomplish.
