Portforwarding / IP Override

A friend and I want to play Sins together, but we can't connect to each other.  I'm sure it's the same problem that we had in Age of Empires 3, which I can fix easily by changing a file in the AoE3 startup files to override the IP address it uses when connecting to my external IP.

My question is, is there a file I can just change like I do on AoE3 (I just open a text file and change the IP address when I need to), or do I need to do something differently?

I skimmed through other portforwarding threads, but they seemed more focusing on allowing Sins ports, which isn't my problem.  I just need to override my IP address that I use when connecting with my external IP.

You can't connect to each how? From in the same room connected to the same switch/router? Over the internet each behind their own router?

If it's not from in the same room, you will need to download, read and follow the steps in the guide I wrote for SINS hosting-setup (Networking and SINS)

The link to my SINS hosting setup step-by-step guide can be found in the OP of this thread right under the GREEN writing.

If you have in fact downloaded that guide already and are still having trouble following those steps, I'll be glad to invite you onto my TeamSpeak server to talk you through the instructions. Please contact me via xfire to set up a time.

thanks,

EDIT:
By the way, you can change the default gameport which SINS will "listen" on. The default port Sins of a Solar Empire uses for hosting games is 6112 (TCP). The default port can be changed in the user.setting file. Changing this port however will not circumvent the need for port-forwarding if you are NOT in the same room (on a LAN). Changing this port is only really useful if you have more than one person on a LAN wanting to host a SINS game at the same time.

Since he is talking about "external IP" that must be connecting via internet. And then again it is not an "IP-Overriding" issue but a port-forwarding issue. The player that will host the game must configure the router so that all requests on the Sins port are forwarded to that players LAN ip adress. That should do to be able to play Sins via Internet.

If you don't want to use ICO but play 1 one 1 like in LAN but via Internet I suggest using "Hamachi" (hamachi.softonic.de). This is a small nice tool that emulates a LAN via internet. So you and your friend install and connect to hamachi and then you have all the benefits as being in a local area network.

Over the internet.. I was hoping that this was fixable the same way as AoE3, because that was extremely simple and easy to do, but it's obviously not.

I guess I'll look through the other posts and all that.

Just follow the link in my initial reply to you. My guide "Networking and SINS" contains all of the information you'll need to get set up.

Already a problem.. I don't know the username/password for my IP address.

Like I said above, I fixed this problem very, very easily on AoE3... I went to the startup folder for the game, and created a .txt file that set the IP it connects to to be my external IP (the IP that www.portforward.com tells me). It works every time I'm having problems.

I'm not able to log into my IP address router thing by putting my IP into the address bar.

You mean you don't know the username/password for your router.

If you never changed it from the default, check your router's manual (online at the manufacturer's website) or try googling for "default login info for

Addition: If you have changed the Router Password and you can't remember, you can reset the router to default settings (how to is should be in the manual) and then login with the default password as the_Monk said.

Again, if you don't want to do that stuff, download hamachi and use this, it works than exactly as you where in a LAN (so you do not need to reconfigure the router or anything)
