The Orphan Law are coming before congressl

I recieved this today and wanted to pass it along to all those interested in Copyright protection of their work.

IMPORTANT MATTER FOR ARTISTS - ConceptArt.Org News-Brad Holland Interview

Hi everyone,

The email below will be self-explanatory. There is an important issue facing us as artists, related to the copyrights of our works, which corporations wish to control and take at our expense. You could lose ownership of the art you create.  We must put a stop to this immediately unless you wish to see others owning and plagiarizing your art.

This is too important to ignore please participate and forward to your others.

Congress is rushing these bills through to a floor vote. The House will start marking up their version of the bill at 2:00 today; the Senate will do so tomorrow. To try to stop this bill, we first need to slow down the race to get it passed.

FROM THE ILLUSTRATORS' PARTNERSHIP

Take Action: Don't Let Congress Orphan Our Work

We've set up an online site for visual artists to e-mail their Senators and Representatives with one click.

This site is open to professional artists, photographers and any member of the image-making public.

We've provided sample letters from individuals representing different sectors of the visual arts.

If you're opposed to the Orphan Works act, this site is yours to use.

For international artists and our colleagues overseas, we've provided a special link, with a sample letter and instructions as to whom to write.

2 minutes is all it takes to write Congress and protect your copyright:

Ken I posted about this very thing here... https://forums.wincustomize.com/307946 .... no one seems to be very concerned about it.

Sorry I missed your posting. I found it very informative, especially the copyright history and current status. I also wrote in to congress. I am surprized there is not mre interest here as there are so many artists although many are not US based.

That's OK, and WOM, sorry I forgot to mention you posted it too...I will read what you found Ken, and I am sure I will write to Congress also. Thanks for posting this subject again!!!

I would certainly recommend that everyone at least listen to the first link, the orhan_works_information.mp3 file. Most informative.

International Copyright Law is just that.  No country can live in a vaccuum when it comes to its handling....and even the US is not big enough to single-handedly force change, not when 'art' predates the very existence of the USA by millennia...;)

This is, to put it mildly, a hatchet job. Look at the name of the hosting site, for crying out loud.

This is the second link you posted, and it contradicts your point. Utterly demolishes it, in fact.

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=609199

This is the third link you posted, and it only provides one bit of corroborating evidence - that the Oversight Committee did have a hearing on the subject.

http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=121132

This is the fourth link you posted, and it just references back to the third link.

So what does this actually mean? NOTHING. This is one of the most inane bits of "OMG sky falling" nonsense I've ever seen, and I'm typically 110% on the side of artists' rights. The scenario outlined by Radio Free Meredith is pretty much the only time it'll ever come into play: when you've got some old photos you'd like to use for something, but the original photographer cannot be found or remembered. It's insane to think that "big corporations" are sitting around waiting for this bit of legislation to be introduced so they can immediately snatch up everyone's fanfic.

If you are concerned about this, then you should be doing what you already should've done: make sure your name is on your work. Put it under the title of your stories, register your garage-made CDs with a track lookup service, and embed your name and email into the code of programs and skins. Now no-one can claim they made a "reasonable" effort to find you if they rip off your work.

And don't try to sell me the myth of internet petitions. They're bad enough on paper, they're even more worthless online.

Next time, do your research instead of scare-mongering. I don't appreciate anyone - not a politician, not a forum poster - messing with my feelings.

kenwas WAS NOT scare mongering, he was posting something that people may or may not be interested in reading. i suggest you get off your high horse and grow up. If your feelings can't handle that then don't look at the forums :)

Sorry, that did come off a lot more critical than I'd meant it to be. :( As an sometimes-creator who has had material pirated, such news does - frankly - scare me, and to find out that it's another false alarm angered me. I think my own counter-points are valid, but still, there's no excuse for my attitude.

My apologies.

Thanks Nimbin.

DonDodds......I really have no interest at all in "messing with your feelings" and I am sorry if the repost of this letter from concertart.org set off some anger button within you. I would suggest that if you think the points raised by conceptart.org are all hogwash, then you might try being happy that there is not a real problem to worry about. In any case, have a fine day!
