still unsure about ship combat

Hi there,

The manual is really misleading (or I don't know how to read it). It says that you match each weapon against the defence, and if the defence is not of the appropriate type, you square the randomised defence roll. So far, so good. But :

1- If I have a mix of defence, how it is computed?

2 - If you randomize each weapon attack (from 1 to its nominal value) and you does the same for the sum of all defence, it should means that a weapon with power 1 can never bypass a defence of 1, but it is not what I see.

3- How can it be that my missile-1 PT-boat don't do each time 1 hit against a Dreadlord ship which has 0 missile defence?

Thanks for the additional insight I need !

There is one problem with your information. If the defense is not of the appropriate type, you square root the defensive value...not the roll. So armor can still defending against missiles, but it's significantly weaker.

The wiki has a very detailed writeup. https://www.galciv.wikia.com/wiki/Ship_combat

1. The defenses are added together.
2. It looks like the roll is from 0 to the max value.
3. It still uses the sqrt of the other defense types.

Another interesting resource is Kryo's FleetSim. It simulates fleet combat and gives you percentage chance outcomes. I'm not sure what version of the game it simulates, but it can be helpful at times. http://www.threespursdesign.com/calc.htm

The fleetsim is only good for the base game (not DA or TA) since the expansions both use a much more complex method that takes the actual values of each and every weapon into account.
