"the present"

part one - "she says" (by mignuna)

it’s shiny. shiny as the future itself. bright. unviolated. covered and safe.

and, like the future, the present is sitting comfortably on my bed. bound in ropes. golden-edged ribbons with a bias edge of the type that, unlike me, doesn’t fray under duress.

he smiles. i tug at its’ corner and as the ribbon uncoils i hold it up to the light. my simple delight in its’ hue does not long remain untainted by my filth. as its’ end encircles my wrist the first pangs descend on me and as i lift my gaze to meet his i understand that i hide nothing.

i covered my bed in red. (the present lies there still. its’ life will only begin when i touch it). yes, red still shows bloodstains. they go black. you make me laugh when you ask that as if it’s the only thing you don’t know.

i’m not scared of pain, lady, i’m just wondering if my blood-letting will permanently mar your two hundred dollar bedcover. (don’t worry about it. blood only ever gets on the sheets. and those are white).

the ribbon coils back around my wrist and he forgets the present. my pale arm snakes up the bedpost and his eyes never leave me as i bind it there. the golden ribbon wraps the heavy timber post. i whisper the word ‘tethered’, and the blue veins in my wrist that cast my skin with the pallor of death begin a war with my cunt for enough blood to live.

he gave me the present. (so i gave him one back). i let him see me in the kind of light most people are blind in. he rubs his eyes. clears his vision. stares and stares and stares. i tell him “bias-edged ribbon doesn’t cut skin” and i watch him choke on his own breath. he’s far too full too take in another thing.

i stretch my foot, trailing it along the length of the bed. the golden ribbon entwines my ankle, it’s inching progress a voiceless dare to catch the loose end and crucify me with my own sick desire.

the present remains between us but neither of us notice it any longer. the world is red and gold. blood and ties. even our air has a pulse now. it’s like a movie. i drip. and too late i find out that the dark impulses have learned how to scream.

Yes, even though I am a political machine, I, too, appreciate the human touch--even to the present extreme.

I like this..I like how your two styles are so different but they work together nicely. I wish i had something more creative to say but nevermind. Neat idea

I can safely say that I have never enjoyed writing something as much as I did this. Not so much for the final result - even though there are the clear flashes of lightning in Mig's writing that can still leave me momentarily breathless - but more for the process.

It doesn't just stop at the styles. There was me running around getting glasses of Southern, picking up books and putting them down, agitated and eager for the conclusion to burst out onto the page like some kind of orgasm (quite strange really. I have given up smoking and after i finished my section I felt like a cigarette so badly), but i could look across the room and see picture perfect calm, a straight and still posture, slow consideration and a silence that was complete.

I would also seriously recommend taking part in an exercise that has two quite distinct and disparate people reading from a page that is yet unwritten and then setting down to write it, the real Present being the realisation that for all the differences and political disputes you're not that different, just minor variations of words... just words.

Hmm maybe i should try it sometime.

Marco, i hope by southern you mean somekind of obscure australian liquor and not soco (southern comfort). and you better be joking about the cigarettes.

And when are you gonna post somethin you lazy bastard?

ps sorry for rambling on your blog mig!

Not joking. Watching, while not smoking, the Jack Rabbit Slims scene in Pulp Fiction remains one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. "...will you roll me one, cowboy?"

And yes, I am refering to Southern Comfort. I love the way it turns amber towards the end (when mixed with coke) and the way you can drink it straight without feeling like hell is sliding down your throat .

Why? Is there some test I failed or something? Will they stone me in New York like some feral animal?

And when are you gonna post somethin you lazy bastard?

I guess I'll post something when I ain't so damn lazy

I feel betrayed somehow..us smokers have a bad enough rap..we need to stick together! although i am very impressed by your willpower. Have you turned into your brother yet?

Don't watch any woody allen movies.

Where's the fun in alcohol that doesn't hurt? actually, where's the fun in anything that doesn't hurt? Or at least pinch a bit. And no they won't stone you, just laugh at you behind your back. And it's only the bartenders. And the bums. And me.

I'm sure you could post something if you had a cigarette. hehe

hi dyl, hi marco.

marco, if i missed you any more i'd implode. (hell, i may just do it anyway. in my misery, i ate sweets that were red and now i feel like cats do just before they run around the room and up the curtains for no reason).

dyl, i'm so glad you read this. i think marco & i were both secretly hoping that you would. thanks for your kind words. and i agree. marco, pull your finger out. (so to speak. heh).

oh, and marco, as for so-called 'picture perfect calm'. yeah. sure. that's me all over. i didn't howl like a banshee at the airport when you left. not me. nuh-uh. not even a bit ...

I've been wanting to kill the people I love, let alone the people I hate, all in the interest of not killing myself. The cost just doesn't seem worth it. Do all those people really have to suffer for what basically amounts to self-denial? FUCK I WANT A CIGARETTE!!!!!!!!!

Where's the fun in alcohol that doesn't hurt?

Oh, it still hurts, but it's more like the pain of a deep bite given you by a lover - you know you don't really need it, and you know that there is something a little wrong in enjoying it, but you do, even though it hurts and the hurt is the enjoyment. Like self-mutilation, it lets you know you are.

And it's only the bartenders. And the bums. And me.

Great. The only people I would be interested in talking to

And Bogart has nothing on me. Airport grief - there is nothing quite like it, weirdly nourishing in a way. You can imagine a symphony playing just for you as you take those lonely steps up into the cabin and look back one more time, forlornly, at the terminal. (Hold on, didn't the chick do that. Now I'm confused and scared and protectively holding my thing )

Damn it. I felt like a puppy dog that had been kicked in an alley way, and the generally wide spread disapproval of men crying within infrastructure made me feel like a scuba diver that has forgotten to equalise at depth, something needed to give and just couldn't, so it had to be me and only around the spine - silent and internal, haemorrhaging for days.

A friendship like this one can be the deepest thing with the deepest consequences, formative and terrifying. No matter how much it hurts, I wouldn't give it up for all the devil's riches. Sorry to be back home
