Can't Run Sins on XP

When I put the disk in it doesn't even spin, it just makes these wierd clicking noises.

I used this web site to test my computer and it said that I would be able to run the game.

Do other DVDs work? Does the Sins DVD work in another PC? Are you sure that you own a DVD-ROM drive (and not simply a DVD-ROM drive)?

I think Hollow Man meant: are you sure you own a DVD-ROM drive and not a CD-ROM. Maybe your drive is dead/dying? As HM suggested, maybe try another DVD/CD to make sure it's working.

There should be no issues with Sins and XP. I have it running on my XP rig and it's beautiful.

Its both a CD-ROM and a DVD-ROM drive, my other games work on it, Sins will only work on my laptop.

Maybe your drive doesn't like the Sins DVD. I've heard of that happening with various games. Have you tried a firmware update for it?

firmware is the "drivers" that are actually part of the disk drive (instead of being installed on the hard drive) That is a little over simplified, if you want to know more search wikipedia for 'firmware'

You can find them on the drive manufactures web site ubder the 'drivers' or 'support' sections (usually)

If worse comes to worse you can always register the serial number and download the game using Stardock Central.

How do I download and register the game? I've upated my computer and everything, but nothing seems to be working.

Usually that kind of thing is caused by copy protection, which Sins doesn't have.

Yeah, I know it's usually copy protection in that situation, but it's all I could think of to suggest for the guy. Seems really weird it won't load onto his rig. Maybe he has a bad DVD?

Where do I go in Stardock Central? I can't find the 'Register & Download Sins of a Solar Empire' button.

Its been so long...

Tools -> register products, choose Sins from a drop down box and enter the serial. (You have an SDC account already, right?)

Okay, I've got it registered and installed on my computer, but when I try to play it its just a black screen, no sound or anything.

Any ideas?

did you try an alt tab and see if a minidump was there? If so send that in, also there is a user.setting file that has an option to enable show errors(gives more detail than a generic minidump saved at ....).

This happens when I try to start up Crysis with my newest DVD drive. It only gives me some clicking noises and no other response, so I need to use my other DVD drive. Nothing more than an inconvenience because I have other drives, but for somebody with only one drive this must suck. :( It's a LITE-ON drive, by the way. Never had any other problems with it and Sins works fine. Just not Crysis.

When I close the black screen this pops up:

MiniDump

Saved MiniDump:
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Sins Dump\Sins-v1.04-2008-13-12-11-31-2836-2839.dmp

Send that minidump to [email protected]. It's likely to be something on your end, they should be able to point out what.
