Holy cow I've been sick

Need to freeze time

On a bit of a serious note, I have to confess that a lot of my success in life has been due to my health. I don't get sick. Ever.

Let me put it into perspective, until 4 years ago, I never had to blow my nose. I actually didn't know how because I had never had a cold or flu that resulted in my nose being stuffed up.  It was actually a pretty big deal at the time.

But man, I got some virus a couple weeks ago. I've been dog sick.

I was out of town for all of last week on business infecting people around the country no doubt.

You can hear me on GfW podcast last week: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3148397 I'm the dying sounding one. It was pretty bad.

Anyone else there finding that this Winter has been a really bad season for the flu?

Records indicate that this has been the worst year ever statistically for flu and colds in the US. In the beginning of the season I found my self fighting to not be sick, but here at the end I'm riding the curve thanks to vitamins, rest and healthy eating...

For one month, give or take a day, I've been sick, too. Quite so.

Can't be without a toilet within eye-shot. Quite annoying, actually. But it's my only symptom. Trouble is, I'm in the washroom easily 12-20 times a day. Or more.

And yes, I'm seeking medical help hehe.. It's all under control (much as it can be).

But yea, sick. Quite rare for me, too. Don't know what this is. Not viral (according to tests), not bacterial, it's not IBS or colitis (more tests I had done). The sudden onset is what's most baffling to Doctors and myself alike (because with IBS and colitis, the onset of such symptoms tend to be gradual and accompanied by many other symptoms. I've only one symptom. With the stomach flu the onset isn't this sudden, either. Everything else has been ruled out. heh).

It started like a lightning bolt 30 days ago and has gone on since. Anyhow.

That's my story. hehe..

I usually get a cold in the winter and in the spring but I haven't had one since 06. How long my luck will hold is up in the air. It's weird. :d

I used to be the same way. I'd almost never get sick for about the first 28 yrs of life.
Then one year I was on the road all the time for work and ended up with walking pneumonia and decided to do the same thing for it that I've always done for smaller sicknesses and bodily harm, wait for it to heal itself. Everything will eventually, has always been my theory. Only reason I knew that is what it was is because a co-worker had the same thing at the same time and went to a doctor for it. Only took about a month, after the last 2 1/2 weeks feeling like my chest was going to crumble like a brittle leaf everytime I lifted my arms or pushed on something.

Anyways, every year since then Ive been sicker then I ever had been before that at least 2 or 3 times a year.

This years actually been pretty good for me, so far haven't been sick at all.

Of course now that I've typed in this thread I'm probably doomed for it to hit soon

I got the Flu this year for the first time in many, plus the last couple weeks, I have had a pretty bad cold. Still coughing right now :(

I usually get one cold a year, most times it's just a stuffy nose and maybe a cough. Not had one in the past year though, even though everyone around me seems to be getting one.

Its called getting old. Up until March of last year just before I turned 54 I was the same way...never got sick...wore shorts all throughout the winter...never got a cold...not even a sniffle. Then blame...everything started going south. I went from being a guy that threw away expired bottles of aspirin to having my desktop look like a pharmacy...hadn't even seen a doctor in over 30 years until then.

I caught a horrible cold this summer, of all months...it took almost a week to even budge, now i rug up in the morning until its warmed up. colds seem harmles but are a real bitch once you have one......i refuse to take chances anymore....

You lucky, lucky bastard!!!... Tho colds and flu are far from being my worst enemies. Wish they were... I'd feel like an Olympian in his prime, otherwise, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound and mono-ski over the Nth Pole... from one side to the other and back. ;p

Shoot! I'd like just to be able to take my grandkids for a walk in the park and push them on the swings, but osteo arthritis, spinal fusion/compression and a permanent headache (often depression as a result as well) often make those things an ordeal akin to torture.

However, in the words of the immortal Pink Floyd: "The memories of an old man - are the deeds of a man in his prime!"... and as I can recall doing most of the good stuff before becoming afflicted with a crippling disease, I've have many great memories to cherish, not to mention still having a sense of humour that helps keep me going/sane.

Now where's that damned cold... might help take my mind off my sciatica.

Hope you're feeling better but here's what you can do to get rid of those little guys living and happily breeding in your sinus cavities.

Too many nasal viruses this year. Very tough little bastards they are, and they are getting stronger all the time.

1. Take one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar every morning with a small glass of water. Yeah I know it tastes like poo. Just do it! Breathe through your mouth when you do it, and wash it down with some fresh water afterward.

2. Take a couple of capsules of high strength garlic (odorless please ;-)) every day.

3. Drink lots of water every day.

4. Take 2 - 3 capsules of Quercetin with Bromelain every day. Strong antioxidant and soothing sinus support.

...and the most important one for last...

5. Use a neti pot to wash those bastards out of there. I use a 2cup neti pot:
1 tsp of kosher salt
1/4 tsp of baking soda
1/8 teaspoon of Xylitol

You can find all this stuff at the health food store. Whole Foods or "Whole Paycheck" as you like. They sell a nose spray with Xylitol in it but I just add it to my neti pot instead. Cheaper that way.

Remember, the purpose of using a neti pot it to clean those bastards out of your sinuses so don't go hurting your sinuses with too strong a saline solution, or hot water. Just warm enough to melt the crystals. I pour it on my wrist (like a baby bottle) to make sure it's not hot before rinsing. Do one side then the other.

You can google neti pot, Xylitol, Quercetin, Garlic, or anything else to learn about it.

Hope this helps, and hope you all are feeling better.

Cheers,
f

ps here's some links:

some neti pots; mine looks like this, not one of those small slipper looking ones they sell at whole paycheck

Nasal Massages; these really worked for me, not for everybdy though.

Xylitol FAQs; it's used as a dietary supplement, sweetener, however, it is a natural microbe killer. That's why it's used in homeopathic nasal spray like this:
Xylitol nose spray. Some of them have grape seed oil in them as well.

I thought that I was going to be lucky and skip this winter season, even had a flu shot but unfortunately it hit yesterday and it's a big one. Since I live in snow country I've had the flue quite a few times but I never seem to miss them, ah spring is here and hopefully with some nice weather.

I'm an RN and have run into stuff like this occasionally with patients, and last year, I even had it. This could be C. Difficile. A lot of times the tests come back negative for it (stool has to be checked...will be negative). Has your doctor tried you on Flagyl? It's an antibiotic that is really good at getting rid of intestinal bugs, especially C. Difficle. If not, ask him/her for it. If it is gonna work....things should slow way down within 3 days...but you might have to take the drug for up to a month to get it completely gone.

Just a thought....hope you start to get to feeling better..

I have had hey fever (AN Allergy) my whole life, I am very good at blowing my nose.
When I was younger I could not go out side the house in the month of May
because I would have an allergy attack. I could go out for a while if I took the right
combination of allergy pills, but they just lessened the severity.
Then I found my cure,it is smoking cigarettes, they cured my allergy.

Exchanging allergies for cancer....oooook, sounds like a good trade-off to me.  :NOTSURE:

Your body's probably so busy concentrating on fixing the damage to your lungs that smoking does that it doesn't even bother with the relatively low-risk of allergies. Not a great way to alleviate allergies, unless you're actually allergic to good health or life itself.

Personally, i'm allergic to cancer. ;)

Ever experience tear gas,
That is what it is like to have bad hay fever.
If it would have cured my allergy I would have cut off a finger.

On the brighter side,
I haven't had a cavity since I was a teenager.

I usually do not get sick here at all and knock on wood - I've been in pretty damn good health here lately. My only problems is bad habits - like smoking and too much coffee [cappacino]! I stopped drinking alcohol like 8 years ago and that made a major improvement in my health. Plus if I eat like the doctors tell me to eat - I rarely fell bad at all. I get plenty of exercise at work doing tons of walking to and fro work stations. I have to cover a lot of ground to make sure that communications are up and followed properly. Seems people forget a lot and I have to be the one that remembers every dang thing - if I can...
Plus there is always this thing about who you get too close to and need to stay away from - such the like for those that will come to work ill to infect others. I usually take off from work for two good reasons 1. I'm needed at home because my wife has cancer. 2. She has to go to the doctor and needs to be taken.
But I've not had a cold or flu in like years now that I've followed my diet and got enough exercise.
The exercise part is done with moderation. Stress is the number 1 killer for making things happen that are bad to your health.
Having a good piece of mind and keeping in tune with yourself and how you want to feel is the best defense for anything.

Sorry to hear you are ill Brad - hope to hear you are doing better soon !
