Attempting to play online with an apartment connection

I am on an internet connection provided by my apartment complex. I have no router, i simply plug my lan cable into the wall, open a browser and log in, and then i have an active internet connection, which is fairly good in most cases.

I have had this game for a few days now and i have only had one successful game. I usually have people yelling at me to stop my porn downloads because i'm lagging too badly (not dling porn, fyi). During the one successful game, it didnt start lagging until an hour in, though i'm not sure if it was me that was causing the problem. I am also lagging on the game joining screen, but not in the lobby.

My system runs the game fine, I'm running on vista, and i have my firewalls configured.

Is there anything i can do to help my connection or am i pretty much sol?

Having read through the forums, i will be expecting a promt reply from the monk.

Am I that transparent?  :SURPRISED:

Since SINS is P2P (the host really isn't so much a HOST, as Player #1 with the responsibility to sync all player's simulations together) all players (host and clients) should have their networks configured correctly to ensure optimal game enjoyment!

Unless you are able to (have physical access to the router at the network edge) configure your network according to my guide. You'll need to wait for...

...patch 1.1 which will give an optional NAT-T type of connection method that will "tunnel" past routers/firewalls so all of you who cannot/don't want to/can't be bothered to host games right now should be able to using the "encapsulated netcode" method. I'm just glad it'll be "optional" because as always having things "tunnel" past my controls isn't exactly a soothing thought...hehe

But will this 1.1 patch also fix the lag when I am not hosting? And when is this patch due for release?

Lag can be caused by any number of things including ISP's filtering traffic for P2P. A buddy I play SINS with (I do actually play this game sometimes  ;p ) gets bumped off from time to time by the P2P-filtering his ISP does to him.

As far as a release-date for patch 1.1? Sometime in April is the last I heard. Patch 1.04 is the next patch due, but will not include that optional NAT-T netcode.

EDIT: If you know how to use the "tracert" command (at the command-line prompt) you could try running traces to some of the IP's of the people you play with to determine which of the "hops" is the one causing increased latency for you.

You could also use "ping -t xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx > pingtest.txt" at the command-line where the xxx's are the IP address of your ISP's local gateway. Let that run for a few minutes and then have a look through the .txt file to see if the lag-problem is a close as your local gateway.

To many people rammed into the server.
Could be a number of reasons but getting on a better high speed is your only option for online gaming.

It's just frustrating because for a little while my ping will be aorund 100 then i'll hit a huge lag spike and get disconnected. Gonna try contacting the provider, but I doubt they will help. Thanks for the input though.

when you let 10 strangers link together with you to all play one synchronised game, it could be any one of them that is glugging things down.. someone may only have 1g of memory, someone else might have a 56k connection (which works fine for me for 2 player games so far (minimal bandwidth) and can probably support up to about 10 players before it really starts to use even close to the 56k (guess based on the 2p games). someone else might be running it on a 3g celeron. :S You are no faster than your weakest link.
Also, being in an apartment complex, you probably share your bandwidth with everyone else in the complex, so if they have a peer to peer movie sharing site set up, you may suffer from it.

Ya, it always says that i'm lagging though, i guess i'll just have to play in the middle of the night.
