Catabre Catabre

I'm on the fence, should I buy the game or not?

I'm on the fence, should I buy the game or not?

It's either this game or World in Conflict

Like the title says, either this game or World in Conflict.  I've looked into both games, and have asked at multiple forums (including WiC forums) and have gotten many different responses.  Now I finally come to you guys, how many of you have both games and which one do you prefer?

Thanks for all the replies guys, I'll definitely look into Sins a lot more.

I'll add this one last thing. I only played WiC for as long as I did because there were no other good RTS games available yet. I like to get games when they are first released.

I will admit that I got bored with WiC after about a month. Controlling 4 to 10 units just isn't that exciting.

With Sins, you're going to feel like an EMPEROR! The galaxy can be yours!

You should play the Sins demo. Asking for opinions on a fan site is never going to get you an objective understanding of what the game's about.

True, but he wanted to hear from people that have played both Sins and Wic.

Both Wic and Sins have demos available.

what you are saying is not true sure they are fan opinions but honest ones
they talk about the downsided of both games and that is what this thread about
anyway to get back to the topic il make it very simple

Sins of a solar empire =can be long games, something different, strategy, supporting a great developer/publisher,quality,fun

World in conflict = quality, fast action strategy, teamplay, fun, great storyline

thats it hope it helps

Keep this in mind too. With WiC, you cannot design and host your own map unless you own a server and all the players have downloaded the maps.

With Sins, I have read they plan on making it possible to design and host your own maps with ease. Not yet, but soon. Hopefully.

There is an easy to use map editor with Galaxy Forge, but you cannot host those maps easily. They will fix this, I'm confident.

You can automatically share the in-game generated maps without needing everyone to download them separately, but yes, Ironclad is exploring ways to make Galaxy Forge created maps auto-shared as well :)

We are well aware of the issues you continuously bring up and we've consistantly said that we are dealing with them.

This is the first time I have been acknowledged by you guys, that was the goal!

BTW, I never said this wasn't a good game, from what I have been able to play it is great, but its frustrating to see patches come out that don't seem to fix the one thing that is preventing me from completing a game. When this is fixed, this will be the greatest Strategy game I've played!

Yup, finally got a clear answer as to my issues of concern so that's that. AI will continue to be worked on, diplomacy will not be fixed outside of an expansion, end of story. I can't say I'm thrilled about the second part, but at least I know what the situation is so there's no further need to inquire. Pity about the tone of the response, though.

In the interest of keeping to topic, here's the pros and cons of Sins as I see them:

Pros:

-Very stable, largely bug-free
-Great graphics with a "Babylon 5" feel
-Excellent random map generator
-Scales well to low and high end systems
-Allows very small to very large games
-Slow pace allows more thought than a typical RTS
-Emphasis on multiple planet development rather than a single base
-Capital ship "hero" system provides a fun lite RPG element
-Good fleet system allowing easy unit organization
-Empire tree allows good management of fleets and building on planets

Cons:

-Shallow research system populated primarily by small-percent-increase techs
-Only 3 factions, which share the bulk of their techs, buildings, and ship classes
-Excessively random and frustrating diplomacy system which is not context-sensitive
-Weak AI that is hard pressed to provide a challenge even on high settings unless you force it to gang up on you
-Gameplay scale means you spend the bulk of your time looking at icons rather than the aforementioned great graphics
-Gameplay frequently descends into "build ball of units and send at other ball of units" gameplay to which RTS's are prone, there's little to no value in combat tactics
-Empire building is simplistic compared to even the most basic 4X game
-Games are generally long enough to result in capital ships attaining max level and races reaching the end of their tech trees, resulting in the late game always being the same (as there are no more choices)
-Empire tree gets cluttered easily and provides no sense of relative location, and there's no minimap to compensate for this

Buy the bundle pack of COH and COH:OF before you get this game. Otherwise, SoSE is far superior to games such as Kane's Wrath, Sunage, WiC, etc.

Catabre,i think you should just get the game. It's worth it.It has strong constant support.Awesome and addictive gameplay.Low requirements.I would say Sins is a unique game from C&C3,CoH or WiC and deserves your attentions.

It's one of the best games i have ever played.I would put it on my list of best games of all times.

If you are still in doubt, you could try the demo. It's awesome but the time limit just spoils everything when things starts to get exciting.

Do note that whiners makes the most noise while satisfied customers are all busy playing Sins.

@Vinraith,

I dont think Sins is that bad as you said.At least the devs are fixing it now, unlike some other developers that never fix an issue even after years.

Just because you dont like a feature doesnt mean the game is bad.

For my part, I bought it, I'm stuck with it (because Stardock's registration system is such that I can't legitimately sell it) so there's nothing for me to do but try to get the parts of the game that are poor (the AI, the diplo system, the research system to some degree) fixed and to warn others that in my opinion they are well advised to wait for that to happen. Or, you could point them to the demo so they can see for themselves, rather than reading biased (from both sides, to be fair) rhetoric

I completely missed this when you wrote it Annatar, but as you can see above I eventually thought of it myself. The best thing anyone can do is play the game for themselves to develop an opinion, now that the demo's available.
