WB 6.09c (b).118

Stardock Central installed the latest beta on my Vista x64 system. To my great surprise my two good old friends are back: "Windows Explorer stopped working" and "Windows Explorer is restarting". I was really missing my two budies  (:(

Wizard1956: Can you stop running ObjectDock for a while to see if the crashes continue.

O-K Neil I'll give this a try for a while. I'm completly friggin' lost without OD! I don't even keep a recycle bin on my desktop so I had to make a few shortcuts first but it won't let me make one for WB said wb.url has been changed or moved. Do I need to make a quicklaunch button for this before closing Object Dock? ALL my shortcuts were on it and I should try different skins.

I am going to abandon WindowBlinds and all the other Stardock stuff, in spite of the fact that I paid for everything.

This morning WBLIND64.dll crashed at least 10 times causing Windows explorer to stop working. For my work I have several explorer windows open on 2 screens. After the WB crash I have to open all windows again and have them to put in place where I need them. This is not funny anymore.

WB is probably an excellent application for Windows XP but unfortunately not for Windows Vista x64. It is a bit pitty then I have a computer with outstanding graphical capabilities.

I already had to abandon DesktopX because it is not working on Vista SP1 and Vista x64 SP1 unless I switch on UAC.

I like a good looking deskstop and I like the Stardock software very much, but is just not stable enough.

Seppchen: What other applications are you running at the time and what version of WB (6, 6.02, or 6.1 beta)?

Also what are you doing in explorer at the time when it crashes?

An additional question for anyone with this problem, are you running deskscapes too?

An update: Shut down Object Dock at 5:20. At5;30 pm, local 'net went down for an hour. Didn't get to try much til 10;30pm At 11;57 Explorer quit under same conditions as before but with no object dock. Three minutes later, same thing, same way but I also had Java running. At 11;20 pm I turned the Sidebar OFF and no OD. It has three gadgets, the weather channel, a cpu/mem meter and a system info which I've had on it since day one. Tried till 2;am and it didn't quit once! I've been trying since 8:30 this morning and it STILL hasn't quit, even with my av scan and a huge download from hp going on. Bear in mind that I am deliberatly trying to induce a failure to find out what's pissing this thing off. If it turns out to be the sidebar (I'm hoping) I can live without it for awhile. Odd thing is, till WB updated this had only occured two or three times total. WB and Object Dock and occasionally SP is all I use. As for post#32 there is no way in Hell I could go back to NO Stardock/Wincustomize! I bought this thing for entertainment and education and I get both right here. (along with a good dose of humor) I'll just work around things for now, and try to be helpful if possible. 'Nuff said. Long Live Winky!

So on your machine it seems to be linked to having the sidebar running?

Look in the header of this thread for my WB version ! I am copying data from one explorer window to the other (copy and past). Some explorer windows are local other are on a Windows server.

Then the sidebar is always running on my second screen with Everest Ultimate Monitor and two weather channel gadgets.

It seems that WBLIND64.dll once in a while crashes at the same time when I am using Adobe Photoshop CS, Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Premiere. But not always, could be a coincidence because that is the software I use most of the time.

I am using Vista Ultimate x64 so I don't need Deskscapes and I don't run it.

Seppchen: If you are having problems with the beta then you should switch back to the non beta.  Betas by their nature may have problems.

We should be putting up a new build today which has a few tweaks.  I would be interested in knowing if this helps with any issues.

Neil, that's what I did this evening, back to the latest non-beta version. I unchecked beta versions in Stardock Central just to get rid of the temptation to install the latest stuff.

But with WB 6.02 the system icons (network, bluetooth, sidebar, speaker, mobile device center, etc...) look so bloody ugly and rubbled. For one reason or the other the program icons (in my case Nod32,rainlendar, etc..) look good.

Keep up the good work please.

sorry I couldn't reply sooner but yes so far without the side bar running I have had 0 explorer crashes and my 5 year old grandson and I have been on it all day. Spongebob! This is with no object dock, WC Select WB,exp. backgrounds on with 40% transparency. I'll use side bar tomorrow all day and compare notes. btw while my 'net was down I checked a couple things. Even with nothing running 0-5% cpu 40% mem I have 73 to 77 processes and 78 services running. Is this normal for HP/Vista? For instance why would lightscribe be a running service? Forgot to add that I never re-skin the sidebar, it's always on default OS

It is a bit off topic, but I will reply anyway. 40% mem in idle state is a lot. Lightscribe and the other stuff installed by HP should only run when you need it, when you really need it. I have a couple of HP printers and the HP software installs a lot of "pestware" which I don't need. So I uninstalled that. And the service I don't need are disabled or even deleteted. Other services which I need once in while are set to manual.

Now it becomes on topic! I found out that "pestware" installed by Adobe and Corel is definitely delaying or even preventing WB from starting correctly once in a while. These are services like FlexnetLicensing, Bonjour, Adobe updater, etc... I got rid of all that stuff and WB starts like a charm.

So far today windows explorer has quit at 10:00am while checking my 2 mailboxes,11:00-6:20pm played with grand son on a site that is all adobe powered (flash and shockwave) with no problems. came back to start menu at 6:21 ,expl.quit, changed WB's at 6:31 expl.quit, switched between windows at 6:34 expl.quit. Last three times yahoo messenger was only thing running besides WB and sidebar. Sorry I got off topic. I'll save that for another thread. Only common denominator is that the curser is in motion , it never quits a static screen.Any Ideas? Sidebar use does screw things up at least on my machine, yesterday I had 0 quit/restarts without it.

Neil, I installed WB 6.09e(b)126 and the first thing I noticed is that the icons in the notification bar are not rubbled and ugly anymore. I hope this is not a coincidence.

I will report on the crashing windows explorer this evening (my time).

After several days of testing I've decided to add windows sidebar to my "don't use" list, along with the WC Browser and TM. I can't take the chance of permanent damage. If I had the money or the time maybe I could do more with this cheap-assed computer, but caring for a family member 24/7 after his stroke leaves my wife and I with little of either.I was looking for answers and all I got were more questions. There's no help here. End Of Reports...I'll go away now.Good Luck, all.

Ten hours after the install of 6.09e(b)126. The bad news is that the rubbled and ugly icons are back. So it was a coincidence. The good news is that since 07:00 until now 19:00 WB didn't crash with windows explorer stopping working. I hope that this isn't a coincidence either.

Obviously, this thread died a death and that probaly means that we will have to live the the crashing WB on Windows Vista and that we will have to live with the stopping and and restarting Windows Explorer.

It's pretty bad this isn't fixed yet. I'm sick of having it crash 3-5 times a day. Every time it does, I gotta restart Explorer, go into task manager and close several programs that it "breaks", re start those programs, and simply wait for the next explorer crash. I've tried with the latest stable version, the previous beta, and I'm hesitant to try the new one(Well I think it's new), cause I get the same shit in a FINAL build.

Oh, and now, that I went back to the stable version, I can't play games. =] This has happened for GC2(the most), NWN2, Civ4, and Lost Empire. Once I close the program, it will take me to my desktop just fine, and then everything except some icons disappear, and where the task bar was, theres a block box on the right hand corner. So I wait for 5ish min, CTRL+ALT+DEL, and it opens that menu(Vista users know what it is.) From there, ANYTHING I do will make that page lose all text, and it will stay that way. I let it sit like that for the last half of Last Samurai, and it never loaded. Meaning, I can't play games, unless I wanna hard reboot after I'm done playing.

@geminisama: Thanks for your note ! It is important that Stardock customers keep complaining about their malfunctioning products. I have the impression that it is Stardock corporate policy to stop responding as soon as users get tired complaining.

I tried every stable version of WB and I tried every beta version with the slight hope that some problems are cured. They are not ! And it is not only WB crashing on my Vista boxes, also the wrong skinning for system windows is not resolved yet.

Conclusion: WindowBlinds is not compatible with Windows Vista, and certainly not with Vista x64, it still is what it always was, a very nice piece of Windows XP software.
