Declaring war?

Why isn't this an option in the diplomatic screen? The only way I've figured out how to go to war thus far is to have my ships attack those belonging to my enemy. I know I'm missing something obvious here, but what?

Yeah, I kind of miss the "declare war" option too.

Of course, even more do I miss what I used to do in Civ II, which is to goad and taunt the enemy till he lost patience and declared war on ME. :) That way when I cleaned his clock, I ended up looking like the good guy.

I love GalCiv but I wish the diplomacy engine were a bit more well-rounded. Right now it seems like pretty much a trading post.

why give warning though? :)

I think that the "Declare War" treaty is on my suggestions list though.

Shouldn't a "good" civ declare war ... I mean, that's what good guys do, right? Fight honorable like and all ... just like the US right? :D

Don't worry all your pretty US heads, 'we' all still love you. ;)

"We hereby declare war on you. Since we were good enough to warn you, please take no action against us until our first transports have landed. Have a nice day. Sincerely, (fill in name), Terran Leader. LOL

You can declare war in a round about way.

Go into the diplomacy screen and talk to any race except the one you want to declare war on. Offer to attack the the race you do want to declare war on. Submit the trade and your now at war.

I did this once when I was trying to stop myself from getting a cultural victory and had no ships near the aliens I wanted to attack.

CariElf: [chuckle] True enough (about surprise attacks). It would still be nice to simply have a "Declare War" option, though. While I don't really care to give an enemy advance notice of my intentions, I've found (in other empire-building games) that it's sometimes helpful to do so.

A prime example: I'm playing as a "good guy" and I have an alliance with Empire A. Empire A is currently at war--and getting crushed by--Empire B. I, being A's loyal ally, want to help them, but I don't currently have the necessary military assets available with which to directly threaten Empire B. However, declaring war will often still do the trick of causing B to divert some of their military my way, giving Empire A a chance to catch its breath and regroup.

And yes, I know that in GalCiv you can still help your allies by giving them ships, money, tech, and whatnot; but it would still be nice to have the option of making a formal declaration of war.

Bhazel: Round-about is right! But I tried it, and it worked for me as well. The Altarians were all too happy to accept my offer of smacking around the Yor. ;)

Its a tad cheesealicious, but when I want to declare war I just give/trade a declaration of war to another race. Why give it away when you can sell it ;p
