New Alpha (the one after 5) :)

Hi, I just got home after a three days canoing trip and found a new version to download :) Ive just started a new game and saw this:

As usual I play with autoturn off.

When I colonize a planet, the ship moves ontop the system, the ship vanishes, the system gets it "default" name, and when pressing the turn button I get to choose which planet to colonize and name it and such. Not very good.

The text-scrollig of the new advisor on the planet screen doesnt work.

After moving ontop of a uninhabited system and then changing ones mind about colonizing it, the default name still appears even tho it's uncolonized. I managed to change my mind before the screens where one name it and the choose of which planet to colonize.

One system had the shild-symbol, so I went there. There was a colonyship in orbit even tho I hadnt recieved a message of it. So I deorbited it and put it to use. One or two turns after I got the message that it had completed a military project...

When I clicked on USS Hero to bring it out of autopilot a colonyship in the same sector lost it's autopilot too. Strange. Another colonyship in the sector worked as it should.

I have a "1st contact with new race"-message on my screen and I cant press the Done-button. THe button is there but it doesnt do anything. This message appeard the same time as I got to select which planet to colonize in a system. the "contact" message was ontop but I couldnt close it. So I went on with the colonization and even after that I couldnt close it. So I pressed the turn button to see if that got rid of the message but It didnt, instead the turn button got grayed out as before.

The message queuing is a total mess when playing with autoturn off. I'm gonna have to start playing with it on just to be able to play a game the normal way. Please stardockers...start playing with autoturn off, at least one of you, these things above happens all the time and should be very easy to reproduce.

Ahh I hit "ESC" to try to save the game and then the "1st contact"-message disappeared. Another one was in the queue and that one closed as it should.

This could be a coincidence. The ship had an anomaly next to it and the "bring out of autopilot"-routine was probably queued to the next thing to do after I clicked on that USS Hero. So it looked as those things happened on my click.

Look at the ship-info box.
I played with the n/a ship and decomissioned it.
Then the focus one the map switched (couldnt see any ship there so I decommisioned it too). I repeated this many times. the n/a-info was there all the time and I couldnt see any ship when the map changed to a new spot after decommisioning the n/a ships.

The debug.err revealed:
Debug Message: Destroying ship USS Colony Ship 2710. Orbiting: 0
Debug Message: Destroying ship USS Hero. Orbiting: 0
Debug Message: Destroying ship USS Colony Ship 871. Orbiting: 0
Debug Message: Destroying ship USS Colony Ship 8199. Orbiting: 0
Debug Message: Destroying ship USS Colony Ship 6755. Orbiting: 0
Debug Message: Destroying ship USS Colony Ship 4601. Orbiting: 0
Debug Message: Destroying ship USS Colony Ship 471. Orbiting: 0

Thanks for the report, I don't think many of us test with autoturn off. I think I will start. I have also reported the colonize bug that's already in the que for things that need fixing.

Thanks Again!

Now I got a strange situation;

The main map contains the planet Dester ยด1 as there was a project completed, probably military.

The righthand view shows the Epsilon system where I was about to colonize a system.

Whereever I click the game responds as if I clicked the turn button (even the graphic there shifts as if I'd press it)

I clicked around observing this behaviour...

When I got the research completion screen and hit ESC to get rid of it, the turn button is grayed out and my only way out is ALT+F4.

The turn button is grayed out.

Fredrik,
Your problems sound very bizzar, so I want to ask you about something I have noticed.
When I have such inexplicable behavior I have uninstalled and re-downloaded the game
and the problems have cleared up. Have you tried this yet? Since I have yet to see any of
the problems you described (and I think I should), and since I got an incomplete download
with what appeared to be a successful install until I checked the contents of the Galciv directory
(empty of files, all folders there, but many folders only had some of the files they should), I
uninstalled, deleted directories, and re-installed. Please try this and see if things improve.

Cheers,
Jack

However...Im using a low-end PC (400 MHz) and the latest build seems to take much longer time between turns. Im currently playing with all races on a small map, but it takes over 20 seconds from when I press the turn button until it's "released" and ready to click again. I havent had that on any older builds. No clue in the debug.err either. The gamedate is currently Jun 2227. The time has increased with the gamedate. I have a savegame ready to send to anyone at stardock that are intrested..this time is a bit too long for me to enjoy the game. Not that Im here to enjoy it. Me slave tester :)

I think we need a new "face" to use here that denotes confusion. Perhaps one with
an arc of stars above the head?

Oh, well. I had hopes that my post would help.

Ummm that was not because the latest build. I just tried the savegame with the older alpha 5 build, and the times was the same there. So...it could be the savegame, or that my PC is too weak. I'll also try a restart of the PC.

Fredrik,

I have noticed that continuing with a saved game on a new build does seem to be
problematic. I have not been doing this for a couple of builds now (shame on me),
so that may be the source of your problem. Also, since Cari has indicated that,
even with these alpha builds the saved games should be playable on newer builds,
we should continue to report them. Your impressions with a new game on this
build, vis a vis the problems you have reported in this thread, should be interesting.

Cheers,
Jack

Fredrik,
I'm using a P450 machine, so fairly similar to yours and I do not have a slow down problem or any of the problems you are seeing. I suggest trying a new game and failing this again doing a complete uninstall, deletion of directories and temp files, download and re-install. If this doesn't work then something very strange is going on.

Paul.

Thanks for the ideas. However...if I delete/uninstall it it will be hard for stardock to see what's wrong and prevent it from happening in the future.

(And the game Im having problems with is a game created on the Alpha 5a build)

I've been going through this long list cataloging the individual bug reports and the last one has just blown my mind...the only thing that I can think of is that maybe the focus got messed up like with the sticky slider buttons...

Fredrik, you said that your saved game will reproduce this situation?

Do you use dual monitors? What type of video card do you have?

Fredrik,

There should be a way to get the graphics card specifics from your operating system.
On mine (WinME) I use Start->Programs->accessories->system tools->system information.
This brings up a window titled "help and support". In the left part of this window is a tree
like display with the top entry "System Summary". In that tree is an expandable item
"components". When this item is expanded it includes an entry "display". Left clicking on
the entry "display" causes the OS to gather the information about the graphics card (if the
manufacturer provided it) and displays it in the right part of the window. This window
has a "file" menu that allows you to save this information in text format.

I hope this helps. You may find something similar if you are using a different version of
MS Windows.

Cheers,
Jack
