It's gettin' hot in here....

...but you can't take off all your clothes cos you'll get eaten up by skeeters....

Holy cats it's hot in Indiana!  Actually, it's not so much hot as it is humid.  That's the part that's killing me.  And, along with humidity come....bugs!!!  Voracious mosquitos - I think I had 20 bites at the last count, and that's despite my wearing 'Off' 24 x 7! Slugs the size of....umm.....well, they're big.  Nasty, icky, slimy things.  Mantis', crawling on the fence post at my in-law's house.  Dave was poking at one earlier and it ran up his arm, causing him to squeal like a girl and do the 'get it off me' dance.  Fire flies - now those are cool to sit and watch in the twilight.  Spiders, snakes, frogs, cicadas (YUKKKKK!!!!), crickets..we have a natural orchestra striking up here at around 6 pm (and going all night).

As Geezer and M-Post both know, this area is very rural.  The pace is slow, and I like that.  People are friendly, and rather than ostracizing folks from out of town, they want to ask you questions about what it's like where you're from and ask you to say words so they can marvel at your 'different' accent.  The food is good - down home cooking, the kind that sticks to your ribs (and in my case, my ass) - the prices are reasonable, and the wait staff are, for the most part, not snotty.  Dave and I are going to have a little money to invest in a couple of years, and we've started to browse the home finders magazines to see how much property costs.  I'd like to retire here.  I'd be perfectly happy being a freakin' Wal Mart greeter as long as I had my garden, chickens, goats and dog to come home to at the end of the day.

My mother in law is a country crafter.  I have a couple of skills that she doesn't have (knitting and embroidery), so we're trading off...she's going to help me make a blue jean quilt and I'm teaching her how to embroider (I'm embroidering some pillowcases to co-ordinate with the blue jean quilt). She's also teaching me the finer points of canning and growing tomatoes.

So far, I'm having decent time.  A few rough spots here and there, but nothing that I can't get over and recover from.  It's just hard being in someone else's house and not having to option of going back to your own house.  I'm in limbo, and I don't care for that much.  But, doing thinks we don't like to do builds character, and that's always a good thing...right?

Later, J-Users...keep my spot warm for me, because I will be back!

A/C in southern Indiana is not an option, it is a requirement. And property there is cheaper there than here in TX.
So is the water bill.

too hot? wait a sec.......whew, I had a tear, but it dried up under the texas sun. good to see you back.
What kind of embroidery? I crosstitch....good way to kill time on cq, but boy you should see the looks I get.

Glad to see you checking in Dharma. Yeah, the humidity is the killer. Utah gets hot during the summer, especially souther Utah (up to the 120 range) but it isn't nearly as tough as the 95 degree days here in NC with the humidity.

Keep hanging in there!

Hang in there deary, thanks for letting us know how you are doing!

YES, YES, YES!!!!!!!!  I think there'd be nothing left of me but a grease spot on the concrete without A/C!  And you're right, property is cheaper here...which is exactly why you should get your rear end the heck out of Texas and back up here (and also so I'd have someone else to go eat at the Buggy and get drunk with!)

What kind of embroidery?

I do traditional hand embroidery.....stitches include chain stitch, lazy daisy, satin stitch, whip stitch...that kind of thing.  The kind of stuff you see on antique decorations and garments.  My mother taught me some skills that are serving me well now......the next project I have in mind is a BDU quilt for my boy's bed.  I figure I can pick up old BDU's and DCU's at thrift stores and yard sales for not much dough...and I'm going to end up begging you guys for patches and badges that I can't usually get my hands on to embellish with.  I can imagine that you do get some funny looks - it's not an everyday occurrence to see a dude sewing!

95 degree days here in NC with the humidity.

OMG do i ever remember that!  I lived in Goldsboro for a few years...close to where you're at. The humidity there is just horrible too.  My mom, when she came to visit, descibed walking out of the airport as like 'walking into a warm, wet blanket'.  I guess i got spoiled, living up in SD for almost a decade.  We had almost no humidity there, so this is a shock for me, that's for sure!  How's the heck are you, anyway, Peter?  How's your wife doing?

As I only have a basic knowledge of the US, I only have a vague idea of where Indiana even is... Ontario is pretty cold right now at night. At least for summer.... 48F. (and I had to check an imperial unit counter for that conversion!) Peace to all, I miss you much, wherever the hell you are!

Welcome to the midwest, Karen!    Having lived here pretty much all my life, I'm more or less used to it....but that's after about 40 summers.  But, on the bright side, coming from South Dakota, winter should be easy this year!

Don't want to sidetrack too much here. . .but you asked!

We are doing great. I just finished up my second year of med school, so the toughest part is over. And Lissa is doing well. Sick all day, but at least not throwing up! I will fire you off an email with more! Take care.

Awww...thank you!!!!  I'll be back regularly as soon as we get our household goods and a place to put them!  In fact, the first thing I'm going to unpack is the 'puter...

I'm off to St Louis and Scott AFB tomorrow, but I'll email as soon as I get back on Wednesday......how's you hubby doing..and more importantly, how are you doing?

Peter...I'm soooo glad that all is well in your corner of the universe!  When is she due?

dharmagrl: He's fine . . . we are both excited about his upcoming leave. He started a blog site on here as well (it's contagious!). He's AdrianthePatriot (plug, plug). I'm doing fine as well . . . spend way more time than I should on JU! But it makes me happy.

Everyone here is great, but there is definitely an empty space in JU that only dharmagrl can fill. Can't wait to have you back . . . very best wishes on the rest of your trip and getting your new home set up.

Well, I'm back from Scott AFB...and I think that I'm going to like it there.  It's big, but not huge...the of-base communities are more than adequate food and shopping-wise, and St Louis has tons of FREE stuff to go do.

We looked at a sample house, and while it's older, it's nice. One storey (which my back will love!!!), 4 bedrooms (which the kids will love!!), 2 baths...a carport and a small terrace, and a decent sized front yard.  We should be able to get a house a week after we get there (keep your fingers crossed for me, all you Joe Users), so once that happens I'll be back in the saddle again.  I can't wait to get over there and get moved in and settled.  It feels......almost like home already. I have all these plans for decorationg and all that jazz....and I'm impatient to get moved in and get started!

So, that's the news.  Oh, and Dave and I got new cell phones....Cingular rocks!

Geezer... I'm in Charlotte right now and it's actually kinda nice. 80 and sunny....low humidity I was shocked!

And i know humidity makes heat even worse in the summer. But try living in a high desert where it hits 100 degrees. it sucks the moisture right out of you and makes it 100 times worse. bluedev knows what i'm talking about. Take it from two Utahns

It has NOTHING to do with the weather there. slcguy. It is the town of Jacksonville N.C. that almost everyone ever stationed there HATES!
For hot weather come to Ft Hood. Bleh again!

Oh man, ain't that the truth! I remember bike rides in the 100+ weather that were so hot and dry that your sweat never even had a chance to get your clothes wet, it evaporated so fast. Your mouth, eyes, nose, just get parched.

Let me know where to send patches. I have some from CAP. that could be fun.

Miggy!!!  You came back!  Yay!!!

I'll be back as soon as I can get my household goods and a house to put them all in!  Shouldn't be more than a couple of weeks...I hope.

I'm rapidly getting tired of staying at someone elses house with nowhere else to go.  At least when we were here before I had a home that I could go back to if I needed/wanted to...right now I don't have that option and I really don't care for that!  Oh well, we're out of here on Monday.....not long to go now.

Jander's mom - Jander's has my old mailing address, as soon as I get a new one I'll pass it on...and thank you! CAP patches will be something the boy's won't have seen before, I'm sure that they'll love them!
