Questions from a Newbie

Let me qualify these questions by saying that I really enjoy this game, and would enjoy it more with a quality strategy guide that explained some of its concepts.

Anyways seems like a keeper.

Ok

Could someone please explain the following to me, or at least give me a link to somewhere that explains these questions fully.

1. How do trade goods work? I completed the gravity accelators and diplomatic goodies, but what now? I already have established trade routes, and am not sure what I am expected to do with these.

2. How do you invade a star system? In the books it says that you have to send troops via transports, but I have yet to have the option to build anything other than star ships. What technology am I missing? Is there anywhere I could print out a tech-tree that gave me info on what units it allows you to produce?

1) Tradegoods are a product that you hold a monopoly on and grant certain bonuses. You trade it just like a tech in the trade screen from the foreign relations section of the game. The upside to trading goods versus techs is that you are licensing their use, not just giving it to them outright so they can't turn around and sell it to other civs.
Currently, there are some quirks that allow more than one AI to build the same trade good if they start them around the same time. Once that's squashed they will truly be a monopoly good.

2) Transports come with Impulse Drive, and later you get Combat Transports (larger capacity, better defense) with Battleship tech.

As for the tech tree go see this site:

An excellent resource with a couple of versions of tech trees for you to peruse.
