We're starting to implement some of the community features. The first one is the ranks:

We don't want GalCiv.com to be a typical game site. Our goal is to turn GalCiv into a community over time that pretty much runs itself. Too often games come out and the developers move on to other projects and great games just sit by and decay.
But if things are OPEN enough, a community can thrive. Look at Total Annihilation. Cavedog is gone but the community continues. But imagine if Cavedog had set things up from the start to have that community? What we want to do here is have a system in which people are able to gain increasing levels of access so that they can post news, moderate the message boards, approve metaverse changes, approve new technologies submitted by third parties, create polls, approve of new anamolies, events, improvements, and ships. Etc.
We also hope to use the access ranks in the metaverse which we hope will evolve into a quasi-persistent universe.
This gives the *players* far more control over the game's final destiny.
Right now, promotions have to be done manually by an admin (Eventually users will be able to promote others to within 2 or 3 groups below them (i.e. a captain can promote a citizen to an ensign for instance). This means that if you feel your access is "too low" give it time, since we're coding the game right now we haven't had much time to promote users yet (and right now it's meaningless beyond prestige).
Hope you like it!
