DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL

By Jess

After seeing dashboard confessional play at splendour in the grass in Byron bay on the 24th June I found myself at their side show in Melbourne on the 29th at the metro. Dashboard confessional shows are known for the phenomenon where their fans drown out singer Chris Carrabba, if you don’t believe me simply look at any live DVD of theirs. Being over here in February the band was surprised by the fan base that they had in Australia and played sold out shows. I couldn’t miss out on the experience this time around and Thursday’s gig proved to live up to my expectations, a packed metro sang along to many of their new songs, yet asked early on whether we wanted to hear older or newer songs the crowd gave an overwhelming “old!”. With a mix of old, rare and new tracks Dashboard confessional put on an awesome set satisfying their newer and old faithful fans. While the audience sang loud and proud, Carrabba’s Fiona Apple’s cover mid way through the show hardly commanded our attention, yet we returned loyally once Dashboard played the songs that were known and loved and proved the diversity of their music. Chris Carrabba is a vibrant performer whose voice is loud, proud, heart broken and flawless, for fans of the band the live gig enhances the love, for those unfamiliar, Dashboard offer true emo with all the stories of love and heartbreak and a simplicity that is charming and complicated at the same time.
