What's your hobby?

What's your hobby?

What do you do for fun?

I'm reading 'Simple Abundance' and todays thought was about hobbies.

I used to have an abundance of hobbies.  I used to sketch, knit, crochet, sew....target shoot, fish, swim, practice yoga...

...and somewhere down the line I ran out of time and energy.  I can't quite pinpoint where it was, but I simply stopped doing all of those things.  I didn't have the time, or the energy, to do my hobbies anymore.  When someone asked me what I did for fun, I'd have to stop and think about it...and then would usually only be able to come up with "umm...watch TV?" as a response.

Recently, I've tried to make a point of making time for myself to practice my hobbies.  I'll turn the TV off or go outside to read instead...or if I am watching TV I'll pick up my needles and knit.  I'm trying, in this ever-frantic world, to make time for myself, to give myself permission to do that which I enjoy.

My question to you is this:  what are your hobbies?  How do you make time them?  If you don't have one...well, why don't you have one?  And if you could choose anything as a hobby, what would it be?

I'm looking forward to seeing your responses.  It's going to be interesting to see how JoeUsers spend their downtime.

Hobbies, erm like most of the people here, I love to write (which is probably why I'm here!). Reading too, though i seem to have less time for that at the moment. I love sports with a passion, any sport. i play badminton and tennis, and any other sport I can get involved in I love. I help out at an after school club sometimes that is great fun, and once a week I go down to an old peoples home my pops works at to help out. You know spending time with them, providing some company I guess, not really a hobbie, but i enjoy it. I like walks too, long walks all over the place, me and my friends do that all the time. I love films too. I have a passion for all kinds of film, I think it's the media student in me fighting to get out! Great article, I feel rather boring reading what everyone else gets up to!

..and I feel boring reading what you do in your spare time!

I think it's great that you volunteer so much!

Hmmmm. When my signifigant other is here, I scrapbook. I'm hopelessly addicted and at 8 books and counting, I'm probably never going to stop. It gives me a chance to write my memories before I lose them. I think that's why I decided to try my hand at blogging. I also teach yoga and pilates 8 times a week and chase my 2 year old around, which is a job in itself.

But I find myself trying new things every time Stone is deployed just to keep busy and make the time go faster. This time I'm learning to quilt and sew...key word is learning. I hope to have a crib set finished before my next one (a girl*big grin*)arrives in November...I just have to learn patience for the details....

It's interesting to see all the different things that people are involved in....I think it's great that in this high paced world, individuals can focus on themselves and do something that brings them joy . It's hard not to get caught up in the day to day rush sometimes....

Where's he at?  Mine's in Greenland...comes home (after a year's absence) in 15 days...and I am a nervous wreck!

What 'flavor' yoga do you teach?  I was asked to sub-teach that here at Ellsworth before my accident.  I usually blend Hatha and Ashtanga....I've done Bikram a couple of times and really liked that, but there aren't any Bikram classes around here.  We're moving soon, so perhaps I'll have better luck at our next base.  I do a little Pilates every now and then as well, but mostly it's yoga.

I tried quilting a few years ago.  That's something I'd really like to learn how to do...I have it in my head that one day I'm going to make an heirloom quality double wedding ring pattern quilt that will stay in my family for generations.  We're moving closer to my in-laws, and my mother in law sews professionally so perhaps I can get her to teach me a little quilting 101.

If you like I can knit something pink and pretty for your next little one - it might take me until October to turn it out because I'm swamped with moving and projects for other people - but I'd still be happy to come up with something!

My husband and I both say that if we ever win the lottery or come into a substantial amount of money we're both going to become professional students.

That's cool. That'd fit in my world-view too.

I'm a professional supervillian, more along the lines of Doom than that wuss Luthor.

And btw, CS Guy. You need to be more punctual. I mean, I go to the trouble of creating a giant spider and you can't even show up on time. Some of us have a schedule to keep!

Sorry, dude. There was a horde of man-killing robots on the freeway. They weren't so bad, but signing all the autographs afterwards took some time. And I certainly couldn't let down all of my lady fans.

I used to scrapbook... been two years though. : ( No time!

I write letters, do calligraphy. I read voraciously, mostly non-fiction and quite widely. I read two or three books at a time. I enjoy blogging, but it's so blasted addicting. Politics are a hobby, as is history, philosophy, and theology. I dabble in anthropology, linguistics, et cetera. I guess my hobby is: I'm a nerd. There. I said. Happy now?!!! : )

Interesting article! I try to do quite different things when not working. Cooking is my main hobby, since my relationship to food closely resembles addiction. I buy a cookbook for a particular cuisine, i.e. Japanese, Thai, Indian, Cajun, whatever, and use that book for inspiration for a while. Travelling around the world in your own kitchen! (which is a necessity if you consider traditional Swedish cuisine...) Shopping for groceries jn small specialty stores is very enjoyable as well.

Badminton, gym workouts and other sports. I have practiced Aikido but unfortunately had to quit due to problems with adhering to a strict schedule. But I certainly recommend aikido, a nice mix between traditional martial arts and the more philosophical aspects of martial arts.

Me and a few friends have our own book club that meet every six weeks. One of the members buys a paperback for the rest of the club to read and cooks for all the others. At the next meeting, the previous book is discussed and a new book is handed out by the next member in turn. An excellent way to read literature that you would otherwise not read.

Things in line for this autumn are Poweryoga and Kickboxing. And that sichuan cuisine book that has dwelled untouched on my bookshelf for all too long...

My hobbies would be reading, doing puzzles--both crossword and jigsaw--, scrapbooking, attending festivals of all sorts, and collecting teddy bears. And I need to get myself back into a decent exercise routine!!
