Music in .OGG instead of .MP3?

.OGG are known for not being as large as .MP3 and to be of better quality for same bitrate. And .OGG is under GPL. http://www.vorbis.com/

Is there a reason why GalCiv's music is in mp3 format? Was there a problem to put it in ogg? :notsure:

Oh besides, Vorbis developers would hit me... It's .Ogg, not .OGG. So it's pronounce "Dog" without the "D" :p

I could be wrong, but since most folks haven't even heard of the .OGG format yet, that may be one reason. I wasn't even aware of it until I read about in here the other day. I'm not saying I know everything, but I am a significantly certifiable tech/net/game junkie.

One problem I have with .OGG though, at least as I know of it yet, why don't they have the OGGDropper set up so that you can just drop .CDA files into it? I have to rip them to .WAV then drop them in. Any progs out there that rip straight from CD to .OGG?

I can't believe you haven't heard of CDEX! I havent used the latest and greatest, so I dont know for sure if it does cda -> Ogg.

I think they use MP3 because that is what everyone and their mother uses. Very few people have heard of any of the other formats except in techie circles.

I use Exact Audio Copy to rip my CDs directly into Ogg Vorbis. And in Linux there are quite a lot of apps that can do that, I use Grip. Almost all of my music is in Ogg Vorbis. It is quite a bit more advanced format then MP3. It gives me smaller files which sound better. And if you need to you can also encode into multichanel Ogg Vorbis files (great for movi audio). This is the future of lossy audio music. Another format I regularly use is FLAC which is an open and free lossless audio format.

Is it possible to use Ogg Vorbis files with custom playlist in Galactic Civilizations? If not, could you please make it possible.

I talked to the devs on IRC and it would take a rewrite of the player code. Keep your fingers crossed. I think there is another voice to increase the sampling rate to something higher than 192.

Lotsa games these days are using ogg. A big reason is that they don't have to pay any licensing fees for it. It sounds nice too.

"Lotsa games these days are using ogg."

But the majority of end users aren't, and in a game that has a custom playlist feature, telling users that they have to convert any song they want to use into a format they've heard of isn't going to go over very well.

What are the licencing that comes over MP3? Is MP3 created for pecuniary reasons or is it GPL?

To decode/encode in MP3 format, you're supposed to get a license from Fraunhofer IIS-A and Thomson. You can read about it at www.mp3licensing.com . In a nutshell, they devloped it, they have patents, they want money if you use it.

Winamp gets away with having a free mp3 player because they used to charge for full versions. Now their licensing is paid off, and they can give it away for free
